Early Times Report jammu, June 27: The J&K police headquarters (PHQ) is faced with the shortage of officers of the rank of DIGs as a result of which several posts in different wings have been lying vacant. PHQ has a total of 17 DIGs. As five of them are on central deputation, it is left with only 12 DIGs. The number would further get reduced to six as and when the government puts its seal of approval on the promotion list of six DIGs whose names have already been cleared for their elevation to the next rank of IGPs, according to police sources. With only six DIGs, it would become difficult for PHQ to run the police administration effectively, sources said, adding that the government had put on hold the promotion list of six DIGs only due to the fact that their elevation as IGPs would lead to the lessening of the number of DIGs to six. Some police wings, including armed (Kashmir), vigilance, crime, railway and security, were already running without DIGs. Of the six DIGs, whose promotion list was likely to be released in near future, some were posted in police ranges. "After their elevation as IGPs, the ranges held by them as DIGs will fall vacant and the PHQ does not have the requisite number of DIGs to fill all these vacancies," sources said. "The problem is expected to get further compounded with the government's indecision to promote SSPs as DIGs," the sources added. Sources said two DIGs were already having additional charges with them. They included DIG CKR and DIG of traffic police. "Both are holding additional charges because PHQ doesn't have adequate number of DIGs to fill vacancies," sources said. |
