No citizenship rights to refugees from Pak, says BJP
Betrayal of cause

Early Times Report
jammu, June 27: The refugees from Pakistan (called West Pakistan before the emergence of Bangladesh in 1971) on Sunday got the biggest ever shock. The shock was administered by no other party than the BJP, which all along pretended that it was the champion of their cause. And the shock was administered in Jammu itself where these hapless and abandoned refugees had been leading a wretched life since August 1947, as they do not enjoy any citizenship right in the state. They are Indian nations but not citizens of J&K. What an irony!
What exactly happened on Sunday or what did the BJP leaders say about their demand seeking citizenship rights? Two BJP leaders spoke on the issue.
Notwithstanding the fact that J&K Assembly only in the ongoing budget session had rejection the age-old demand, BJP national vice president Avinash Rai Khanna asserted that the stand of the party on the refugee issue had not changed and that it was committed to granting citizenship rights to them.
"There is no question of changing stand on this issue. We are committed to grant citizenship to refugees because this issue is on the top of party's agenda…The BJP would continue its effort in this regard…The issue would be discussed with the state unit to devise strategy to solve problems of the WPRs. We will sit together and examine statement of the coalition government in the Assembly on these refugees," Khanna was quoted as saying.
It is obvious that there is still no unanimity on the issue even among the BJP leaders. Its no wonder then that the refugees from Pakistan have also developed contempt for the BJP. Only on June 19, refugee leader Labha Ram Gandhi accused the BJP of betraying the refugee cause and warned that it would be taught a lesson in the next election.
Dalits, migrated to Jammu even before the state got acceded to India on October 26, 1947. The then Maharaja of J&K, Hari Singh, had promised that they would be honourably settled in Jammu, but it was not to be as Jawaharlal Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah hatched a conspiracy against Jammu and the nation as a whole by transferring political power from Jammu to Srinagar and that too to a person who was known for his hatred for the Jammu Dogras and for his desire for "Switzerland-type independent Kashmir" as well as Greater Kashmir comprising Kashmir and those areas of Jammu and Ladakh where the Muslims were somewhat more numerous.
