Crossing the line

Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 10: Bandookwali Hina Bhat of BJP on Saturday again crossed the red line by condemning the killing of dreaded Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in the Kokarnag area of Kashmir. She virtually spoke the language of separatists and semi-separatists and said the killing of Burhan shattered her mother. She, like NC working president, didn't say that Burhan was a terrorist who carried on his head reward of Rs ten lakh and that he was involved in anti-state activities.
Her despicable statement naturally attracted the attention of the nationalist media, which not only lambasted Hina Bhat but also questioned the BJP's soft approach towards her. When asked what the BJP had to say about the abominable statement of Hina Bhat, the irritating BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra shamelessly said that what she said was not the party line and that what she said was her personal view.
"The BJP hails security forces for liquidating terrorist Burhan; we do not approve of the statement of Hina Bhat," said Patra, adding that "yes, Hina Bhat belongs to the BJP".
The fact that the BJP didn't throw her out of the party then and there only exposed the BJP's duplicity and the result was a scathing attack on the BJP.
Earlier in November 2014, Hina Bhat had challenged the BJP and declared in Srinagar that there would be no reference to Article 370 in the BJP's election manifesto.
"Rest assured, there will be no reference to Article 370 in the BJP's election manifesto. I will pick up the gun in case the BJP raked up Article 370 during the election campaign. I am also a Kashmiri and will turn militant if the BJP tinkered with Article 370," she had openly said. Even that time, the BJP high command didn't act against her. Contrarily, the BJP endorsed her view and didn't release the election manifesto, which had already been printed after it was duly approved. Prof Hari Om was the chairman of the Manifesto Committee, but he was not taken into confidence. He was kept in the dark. Such was the influence of Hina Bhat on the BJP high command.
That the BJP again let her go scot-free only suggests that the BJP indirectly, if not directly, endorsed her view. Indeed, the BJP high command is playing havoc with J&K just for the sake of a few crumbs.
