Over 125 outstanding sports persons deprived of Govt jobs
Elusive 'amendment' of SRO 349

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 10: Over a hundred outstanding sports persons eligible for appointments in government departments under SRO 349 have been deprived of their legitimate due in the last five years by the successive governments while hopelessness is growing amongst the heroes who brought laurels for the state braving all odds.
These outstanding sportspersons divulge that authorities of the state administration have been feigning 'amendment' in the existing SRO that provides for Government jobs to 25 outstanding sportspersons every year. "No appointments have been made since 2012 and the number of such eligible sportspersons has reached 125; yet every time we inquire from the General Administration Department, we are told that the SRO is to be amended" said an eminent sportsman of the state. "Does it take five years to amend an SRO and what about the fate of sportspersons who are waiting for years, ?" he questioned.
Sources disclosed that in 2012, when Raman Bhalla was the Minister for sports and youth affairs, 25 sportspersons were shortlisted as per the merit after they ran from pillar to post to get their legitimate due, but five years since they were shortlisted, appointment orders in their favour have still not been issued due to queries raised by various departments. "Those appearing in the list finalized in 2012 are still waiting for their appointment orders while no fresh notifications have been issued by the GAD inviting applications from eminent sportspersons under SRO 349" said a decorated sportsman of the state, expressing anguish over the raw deal meted out to sportspersons.
Allegations of discrimination are being leveled against authorities for deliberately not taking up the process of recruitment of sportspersons under SRO 349 as most of the outstanding sportspersons come from Jammu region. "This is a deliberate attempt on part of the authorities in GAD, Sports Council and department of Technical Education to delay implementation of the provisions of the SRO as most of the eligible sportspersons are from Jammu" said an aspirant who has been waiting for the notification for three years. He also alleged that Sports Council had been manipulating the SRO concerning allocation of sports quota to players for admissions in professional colleges of the state to extend undue benefit to the blue eyed sportspersons of unrecognized games. "Recently there was resentment within the Council when secretary tried to provide such benefits to blue eyed wards of influential people under this SRO to grant them sports quota at the cost of genuine sports persons" he added.
Meanwhile, these outstanding sportspersons have appealed to the Sports Minister and Chief Minister, who is president of the state Sports Council to intervene in the matter and ensure that they are no longer deprived of their legitimate due.
