Data paints grim picture of school infrastructure in JK
Schools lack toilets, ramps, playgrounds

Jammu, July 22: Notwithstanding the much touted achievements made under Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan (SWA) the virtual reality about the government school infrastructure in state is that only a handful of them have facilities like toilets, playgrounds, boundary wall, ramps and drinking water while majority of them are still bereft of these facilities.
According to the recent data disclosed by union government it has been come to fore that state has a total of 23834 government run schools out of which majority are still without basic facilities.
Out of total government schools, 13492 have no toilet facility for students including 9086 have no toilet facility for girls besides 4406 have no toilet facility for boys, and total accounts for 56 percent of the schools.
In regard to facility of playgrounds, the need which is also emphasized by union government for physical development of students, 72 percent schools have no playground facility. Out of total 23834 schools, a total of 17301 have no such facility while as in context of boundary wall of schools are concerned 74 percent have no boundary wall, which are 17840 schools.
With regard to the facility of ramps in schools for specially-able students, the facilities are almost nil as 78 percent schools have no such facility. A total of 18620 schools have no ramp facility out of total 23834 schools.
Regarding the facility of drinking water in government schools a total of 2594 schools still have no such facility and it can be easily gauged, as how the students will manage this demand.
Moreover, about the issue of teachers' sanctioned strength and vacancies in the schools a total of 11833 posts of teachers are still vacant in various schools.
Out of total 101301 sanctioned strength of teachers, a total of 11833 posts are still lying vacant including 9695 posts under state government and 2130 under Sarav Shiksha Abhiyaan.
