Infighting in PDP irks CM Mehbooba
7/22/2016 11:15:58 PM

ET Report
Srinagar, July 21: Amid ongoing crisis in the Valley, a serious infighting has erupted within the Peoples Democratic Party leaders in south Kashmir, prompting Chief Minister and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti to initiate firefighting, who is believed to have expressed dismay over the behavior of PDP leaders.
Sources said the party leadership in south Kashmir is divided among two groups, one headed by a close relative of the Mufti family and other group mainly comprising former PDP MLAs who were defeated in the last Assembly elections.
The group of PDP-loyalist leaders believe that the close relative of the Mufti family was calling the shots and that the viewpoint of the former was being ignored outright.
Sources said the strained relationship had so festered that there is every possibility of fistfight between the two warring groups while some of the PDP leaders have almost decided to resign from the party ranks.
Insiders said the PDP president had been on tenterhooks, waiting for situation to improve so that she could rush to south Kashmir and douse the flames.
Insiders said during her visit to Anantnag on July 21, the Chief Minister held a closed door meeting with the party leaders from both the groups, separately asking them to shun the differences. She is understood to have told the warring factions that it was not the right time to discuss internal grievances but that the leadership should remain united in the hour of crisis.
One of the groups believes that since the demise of the then Chief Minister late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, they were being ignored by the party leadership.
Insiders said the infighting has left the grassroot workers confused as they don’t know whom they should obey in this hour of crisis when Kashmir continues to be under curfew for the past fortnight. “One group wants us to do one thing whereas the other group wants us to do something else, we are
really fed up of the internal bickering,” said a PDP worker.
