Youth killed in firing at Awantipora, person succumbs to injuries at SKIMS
Death toll in two week long Kashmir violence reaches 50

SRINAGAR, July 22: The death toll in the two week long violence in Kashmir valley reached 50 today as one person was killed in firing of police and security forces at Awantipora, while as an injured person succumbed to his injuries at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura.
Reports said that immediately after the congregational Friday prayers protests broke out at Charsoo-Awantipora in South Kashmir's Pulwama district. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel chased the protesters and lobbed smoke shells in order to bring the situation under control. However, the protesters carried ahead with their protests.
Reports said that following this the forces opened fire on the protesters leading to injuries to at least three persons. One of the injured identified as 19 year old Mushtaq Ahmad son of Bashir Ahmad, resident of Charsoo-Awantipora succumbed to his injuries on way to SMHS hospital in Srinagar. The doctors at SMHS declared him brought dead.
Police sources however said that Mushtaq died after he was hit by a teargas shell while the protests were going on in the area.
In the meantime, Ishfaq Ahmad, a resident of Kokernag area in South Kashmir's Anantnag district succumbed to his injures at SKIMS-Soura here. Ishfaq had sustained injuries after being hit by a bullet on July 10 and after battling for his life for 12 days he succumbed to his injuries today in the morning.
Reports said that at least three youth sustained serious injuries after they were hit by bullets in the Srigufwara area of Anantnag district. Two of the injured have been shifted to SMHS hospital here. The situation turned tense in the area when groups of agitated youth resorted to heavy stone pelting on police and CRPF personnel.
Reports reaching here said that in the Sopore area of Baramulla district a youth identified as Aqib Ahmad Bhat was shifted to Srinagar after he was hit by a bullet fired by the forces during a protest demonstration. Two other youth sustained injuries in the firing incident and they are being treated at a local hospital. In Kakapora area of Pulwama district a youth sustained serious injuries during a protest demonstration. He too has been shifted to SMHS hospital for treatment.
Reports of stone pelting have also been received from many parts of Kashmir valley. Groups of agitated youth fought pitched battles with police and CRPF at many places in different districts of the valley. Protests were reported from Rohama, Panzla and Tarzoo in Baramulla, Khumriyal, Natnussa and Kralgund in Kupwara, Prichoo, Tahab and Tral in Pulwama, Imam Sahib in Shopian and Manigam in Ganderbal. Some persons including forces personnel sustained injuries during these protest demonstrations.
A police spokesman said that incidents of stone pelting were reported from various parts of the valley mainly after Friday prayers with 'miscreants' taking to the streets and pelting stones on police and security forces deployed to maintain peace and order. The spokesman said that such incidents were reported from Sopore, Ruhama, Panzla and Tarzoo in district Baramulla, Khumriyal, Natnusa and Kralgund in district Kupwara, Prechoo, Tahab, Kakapora and Chursoo in district Pulwama, Imam Sahib in district Shopian, Manigam and Ganderbal town in district Ganderbal.
"Despite grave provocations at various places across the valley particularly after the Friday prayers deployments exercised restraint. At Charsoo-Pulwama one Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat son of Bashir Ahmad resident of Charsoo was hit by a teargas shell and got seriously injured. He later on succumbed to his injuries. The parents are requested not to allow their wards to become part of the mobs of miscreants," said the spokesman.
With today's two deaths the death toll in Kashmir violence since July 9 reached 50. Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district.
Meanwhile, normal life remained paralyzed on 14th consecutive day across Kashmir due to the enforcement of curfew, restrictions and strike call given by the separatists. All the districts of Kashmir continue to be under curfew or restrictions by state government. Strict curfew or restrictions were imposed in all the areas of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts.
Barring the post paid mobile phones of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) the mobile phones are not working in the Kashmir valley. Mobile internet services and the rail service continue to be suspended ever since the valley was rocked by protests.
