SRINAGAR, July 23: An Army jawan was reportedly killed in exchange of fire when soldiers foiled an infiltration bid by militants from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara. However, Defence Ministry spokesperson was not available due to curb on cellular services in the Valley. Official sources here said alert troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) noticed a group of militants infiltrating into this side from PoK in Kupwara. Soldiers ordered the militants to stop and surrender. But, the militants fired at the troops with automatic weapons, they said. The troops also retaliated, ensuing an encounter, they said, adding in the exchange of fire a soldier was critically injured. The injured was immediately taken to a hospital where he succumbed, they said. The militants later managed to flee the area, they said, adding additional troops have been rushed and a massive search operation has been launched in the forest area. |
