Srinagar, July 25: During past several days tons of garbage has been accumulated in various areas in the Srinagar city and other parts of the valley.
The reason being the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and other Municipal councils have not been able to collect solid waste from the areas under curfew.
People from several areas of Srinagar complained that the SMC has failed to clear garbage from the roads.
On an average 400 metric tons of solid garbage is produced per day in Srinagar. It is estimated that around 2000 metric tons of garbage is lying on city streets.
"For past over a week, SMC has failed to clear garbage from here. The bins are overflowing and emanating pungent smell," said Nazir Ahmad of Khaniyar.
The residents of Lalbazar, Maskeen Bagh, Sanat Nagar, Rawalpora, Hyderpora, Chanapora, Natipora, Soura, Mehjoor Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, HMT, Humhama, Bemina,Ahmed Nagar, Buchpura, Shalimar, and Nishat also echoed same views.
"The garbage piles are lying here from past two weeks. It is now frequented by stray dogs posing risk to our lives," said Mehrajuddin, a resident of Hawal.
People also complained of pungent smell emanating from overflowing trash bins.
The residents decried the "non-serious" attitude of the SMC towards the messy situation in the city. The medicos too have warned of health hazards in case the littered garbage remained on roads with increasing temperature.
The environmentalists have also cautioned about the presence of garbage for long periods terming it threat to public health and environment.
The authorities in SMC said that the work had been affected due to the current unrest across Kashmir.
"Curfew has affected everything but employees are on work. We have been able to collect 80 per cent solid wastes from all parts of Srinagar. However, in the areas having strict curfew restrictions, we were not able to collect waste initially. Now we are on the job even in those places," One of the officials of SMC said.
"There has been an effect on everything due to curfew. The summer capital is losing its sheen and there is foul smell at places as the solid waste is not being regularly lifted. We hope the situation will turn better," said a resident of the old city.
