SRINAGAR, July 25: Authorities today foiled the 'Anantnag Chalo' call of separatists by putting in place strict curfew and restrictions in many parts of Kashmir valley. Meanwhile, the situation remained by and large normal in the valley. Separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were arrested by police at Hyderpora and Nigeen respectively as they tried to march towards the Anantnag as part of their programme for today. They were lodged in police stations of Humhama and Nigeen.
Reports said that curfew was imposed in areas falling under 12 police stations of Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla and Kupwara districts. In rest of the places restrictions under Section 144 were imposed in order to prevent the people to move towards the Anantnag town. In the Srinagar district curfew was put in place in areas coming under the jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Maharaj Gunj, Safa Kadal, Maisuma, Kralkhud, Soura, Zadibal, Batmaloo, Shaheed Gunj and Pantha Chowk. In the other areas of the summer capital restrictions were put in place so as to curb the movement of the people. Curfew was not in place in areas of districts like Budgam, Bandipora and Ganderbal. However, the people in these districts were not allowed to assemble since restrictions under Section 144 were in place. The situation remained by and large peaceful in these districts with people preferring to remain indoors.
Reports said that some youth sustained injuries when police resorted to baton charge and fired tear smoke canisters to stop them from marching towards Lal Chowk area of Anantnag town. People from Tral, Bijbehara, Sirigufwara, Nanil, Kanelwan and Matipora tried to march towards Anantnag town. However, they were stopped by security forces near Anchidora.
Following this groups of protesting youth clashed with police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The youth pelted stones on the forces with the same being retaliated by lobbing of tear gas shells and firing of pellets. There are reports that some people sustained injuries in Achabal area as police used force on a group of people who were marching towards Anantnag town.
Reports of protests have also come from Jablipora-Bijbehara; Qaimoh, Khudwani and Kulgam. In Srinagar, police had to use tear smoke shells and pepper gas to disperse protesters in Khankahi Moulla area of old Srinagar. A group of people while defying curfew came out and pelted stones on police and CRPF and raised anti-India slogans.
A police spokesman said that the situation throughout the Kashmir valley remained peaceful and under control today. The spokesman said that there was no curfew in most of the towns/areas of Kashmir valley although curfew remained imposed in 12 police stations of Srinagar and towns of Awantipora, Kulgam, Baramulla, Pattan and Anantnag.
The spokesman said that there were no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere in the valley although some stray stone pelting incidents were reported from some places.
Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district.
