Reports said that scores of youth took out processions in several Srinagar areas and registered their protest against the recent civilian killings in Kashmir. One of the procession passed through the Karan Nagar, Sarie Bala, Jehangir Chowk, Batmaloo and other localities and imposed the shutdown. The protesters asked the shopkeepers to down their shutters and stopped the private vehicles from moving ahead. After some time, police swung into action and chased away the youth.
In the Srinagar city protests broke out in the Safa Kadal, Kaka Sarie, Saida Kadal, Rainawari, Jehangir Chowk, Bohri Kadal and other areas. Forces swung into action to disperse the protesters who in return pelted stones on them at many places. Police fired tear smokes shells to disperse the agitated youth.
Reports said that at least 20 youth sustained injuries in the protests across the city. Nine youth sustained pellet injuries. Some of the agitated youth stopped ambulances and thrashed male doctors and asked females doctors to walk by foot. Protests have also been reported from some other areas of Kashmir valley.
A police spokesman said that the situation throughout the Kashmir valley remained peaceful and under control today. The spokesman said that curfew was lifted from all the towns/areas of entire valley this morning except Anantnag where it was lifted in afternoon. Shops opened at many places and traffic also plied. There were no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere in the valley although some stray stone pelting incidents were reported from a few places.
Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district.
