Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 26: Illegal constructions and deforestation is at pinnacle with encroachers and smugglers taking full advantage of the prevailing situation in Kashmir valley which has left scores dead and thousands wounded.
If sources and witnessed are to be believed smugglers and encroachers had a field day to carry out their illegal activities like constructions and deforestation under the grab of current unrest.
Sources said that deforestation is going on unabated at many places including Ganderbal while material for illegal constructions is being carried in the dead of the night amid stringent curfew restrictions in the valley.
"Both illegal construction and deforestation is going on in full swing these days in Kashmir, these people have been taking undue advantage of the current unrest, the materiel for illegal constructions is also being carried during night in Srinagar city and other places as well," a witness told 'Early Times' .
He said that encroachers have almost completed constructions on government land at Harwan on the outskirts of the city " its irony that police is allowing them to carry constructions material including bricks, stones, cement without checking that too in night hours," source said.
Sources at central Ganderbal also complained of deforestation by forest smugglers who have carrying out their activities with impunity.
They said both the administration and police is busying in maintaining law and order in view of the prevailing unrest that gives room to offenders to carry out their illegal activities without any fear or intimidation.
"Since the situation flares up in the valley, people with wicked mindset started taking undue advantages; most of the illegal constructions came up during these seventeen days. While local people have been remained indoors in the wake of curfew administration is restoring normalcy. Now who is going to keep watch on encroachers in this very situation," said a source from Ganderbal area. Sources said that there is every possibility that some corrupt officers of police and administration are in hand in glove with encroachers and smugglers.
"No doubt that the situation at present is grimy but the police could check vehicles carrying building material during night hours, protests and other volatile activities takes place during day but the fact of matter is all the illegal activities takes place during night," sources said.
