Early Times Report

Jammu, July 26 : Erring matador drivers continue to tax thr patience of traffic policemen on busy Jammu roads.
It is not something which is one day's problem, said a commuter, Ashok Sharma ,who daily visits Mubarkh Mandi from Airport area adding that right from Satwari to inner city area , one finds the crowds of matadors being stopped by the drivers at their own sweet will in middle of the road causing unnecessary jams and inconvenience to normal commuters besides more probability of accidents.
Citing the example of crowded Jewel Chowk road aheading towards canal road, Kamal Kishore said that matador drivers block the road from Jewel Chowk upto Cultural Academy gate with matadors generally kept stranded in different lanes on the road creating huge blockade for small vehicles including bike riders .
Mostly people driving private vehicles have been fuming at the traffic cops and resenting the indifferent attitude of traffic police staff posted there to ease the traffic congestion who are unable to reign in on these matador drivers, said Kashmir Singh shopkeeper, adding that there seems no well devised system of Traffic Department to control these matador drivers atleast during peak hours in the morning and evening.
Normal commuters have to remain in traffic jams being deliberately created by matadors drivers for more than required time to reach canal chowk from Jewal, said another car owner, Dr. Om Parkash bemoaning that sometimes he gets late too much to attend patients needing his urgent medical attention.
The main problem of frequent traffic jams, may be it city chowk , Kachhi Chowni, Ambphalla New Plot to Janipur areas and for that matter Talab Tillo belt, is due to recklessness of matador drivers who put their vehicles at a grinding halt wherever they wish in the road to drop or pick up passengers, said retired police official, Shanker Singh. He added that there is no provision of identified matador stops in the city and if few stops exist, no one bothers to halt the matador there with traffic staff acting as mute spectators. He said that joint responsibility both of public and Traffic Department cannot be grossed over, but unless and until the traffic rules are not enforced sincerely by traffic personnel without any prejudice, there is no hope of the situation to improve any further in the near future.
Ram Dass, a lawyer by profession said questioning that are these traffic personnel only meant to clear the traffic jams for VVIPs and Ministers making easy way for smooth flow of their vehicles neglecting general public for which they are basically deployed on roads being public servants. Is not it the irony of the rotten system still being followed by our traffic police in which common commuter using road is meaningless for them, he rued.
Insider from the department wishing not to be named said that matador operators in the city have gradually become more powerful and dominating the traffic police on the road by openly violating traffic rules and regulations for obviously tempting reasons which influence them not to muster guts to apply traffic rules strictly on the matador drivers.
Sant Kumar Dutta, retired army officer was of the view that higher ups of traffic department should come out of their deep hibernation from their air conditioned offices and watch for themselves the awful conditions of normal commuters and padestarians being made more worst by the matador drivers due to hegemony created by them on the city roads of Jammu.
Let them come out and personally see on the ground as to what is happening to traffic law abiding citizens at the hands of uncontrollable matador drivers who are mostly young lads with most of them without sufficient experience to drive on busy roads of Jammu city and some are even under intoxication with no valid licence in their pockets, he alleged.
