Clashes continue to rock Kashmir valley, 20 persons injured

SRINAGAR, July 28: Around 20 persons sustained injuries as groups of agitated youth clashed with police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel at various places in Kashmir valley including some localities in the Srinagar district.
Reports said that clashes between groups of protesters broke out at more than one dozen places in the Srinagar district. Police and CRPF personnel carried out lathi-charge and lobbed dozens of smoke shells against the protesters in order to bring the situation under control. Protests were going on in various by the time this report was filed.
At least six youth sustained injuries when police and CRPF personnel lobbed dozens of teargas shells on a group of protesters at Hyderpora. The injured youth were part of the procession that was heading towards the house of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani that falls in the Hyderpora area.
Reports said that hundreds of youth belonging to various localities tried to march towards Geelani's residence. However, these youth were intercepted by police and CRPF personnel and stopped from reaching the residence of separatist leader. The forces lobbed the teargas shells towards the protesters leading to injuries to at least six of them.
In the Peerbagh area of uptown Srinagar police lobbed many teargas shells on a group of people who were protesting against the recent civilian killings in Kashmir. The protesters mainly youth pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel with the same being retaliated by lobbing of teargas shells. Some of the youth sustained injuries during the clashes.
Reports said that police fired teargas shells to disperse protestors at Kathi Darwaza near the Rainawari area. The police personnel fired teargas shells after the youth had blocked the main road and were impeding the movement of people and private vehicles in the area. The youth pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel thus leading to clashes in the area.
Two minors were arrested by the police and this led to further clashes in the area. The clashes spread to the nearby areas of Rainawari and Saida Kadal with groups of agitated youth resorted to stone pelting on police and CRPF personnel. The security forces personnel resorted to teargas shelling in order to disperse the protesters.
Police lobbed smoke shells on the people who carried out a procession from Jamia Masjid and tried to march towards the Lal Chowk area. As the procession reached near the Nai Sarak area police and CRPF personnel lobbed teargas shells on the people taking part in the procession. Some of the people sustained injuries in the incident with the people being forced to disperse.
In the Batmaloo locality people registered strong protest after a group of policemen allegedly stormed into a Masjid and broke the Public Address System there. Following this people came out in large numbers and protested against the police action. Some of the protesters clashed with the security forces with the latter using force in order to disperse them. Clashes were also reported from Safa Kadal, Noor Bagh, Gadood Bagh and Bohri Kadal areas of the Srinagar city.
At least two youth sustained injuries during the clashes between protesters and security forces in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. Reports said that groups of agitated youth clashed with police and security forces in some of the localities in the old town of Baramulla. The situation remained tense in the area due to the clashes.
Two youth were critically injured at Sangam, Anantnag when one of them jumped into river Jhelum for saving himself from being apprehended by police and another was allegedly thrown from the bridge by police. Both the youth have been shifted to Srinagar for treatment. Clashes have also been reported from Keegam, Keller, Shopian and Imam Sahib areas.
Meanwhile, authorities continued with curfew in South Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Kulgam and Pulwama. Curfew was also put in place in Ompora area of Budgam district and Baramulla town. Elsewhere, the normal life was affected due to the strike call given by the separatists.
A police spokesman said that the situation throughout the Kashmir valley remained peaceful and under control today. There was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere in the valley. Except Anantnag town, there were no restrictions anywhere in the Kashmir valley. Minor instances of stone pelting were reported from some places.
Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 53 persons including two policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan.
