Defunct hand pumps adding to miseries of people, administration non-serious

Bani, July 28: 80% hand pumps - the lone source of drinking water in large areas of Tehsil Bani got defunct resulting into the scarcity of drinking water and cry among people.
The matter has been raised before District administration but it appears that administration voluntarily leaves the public on their own and expresses non-serious hearing of the cry.
Qayom Butt, chairman Gati Panchyat informed that shortage of proper rainfall in the mountainous areas affects the level of water in streams and tributaries resulting in people moving towards handpumps but 80% got defunct after installation but not repaired by concerned authority.
He informed that people raised demand before DDC Kathua during his visit in Bani but government would take the matter non-serious and leave the people on their own.
Vinod Kumar, a local said people walk several miles in forest areas for carrying drinking water. He said daily life affected due to defunct handpumps and appealed administration to initiate the repair work of the pumps to facilitate public.
Bharat Bhushan AEE PHE confirmed the defunct handpumps and informed that ground water authority look after the handpumps in all 4 blocks of Bani tehsil. He said most of the pumps got damaged due to construction of road in mountainous areas but ground water authority proceed the demand for funds to higher authority.
When asked the existing position of grievances raised by people, DDC Kathua ensured to repair the pumps within days subject to availablity of the funds.
