SRINAGAR, July 30: For the 22nd consecutive day normal life was paralyzed across Kashmir due to the enforcement of curfew and restrictions by the authorities and the continuance of the strike the call for which has been given by the separatists.
Reports said that protests broke out in some of the areas in the Kashmir with the intensity of the same being very less as compared to the past few days.
The state government imposed curfew in some areas of Srinagar city and at least three districts of South Kashmir. In the Srinagar district curfew was imposed in areas coming under the jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari and Safa Kadal. In the remaining areas restrictions under Section 144 were imposed.
Curfew was imposed in South Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama and Kulgam. Restrictions under Section 144 in the other towns and townships of South Kashmir were imposed. Restrictions were also enforced in the other towns and townships of Central and North Kashmir.
At least three persons including a woman were injured when security forces opened fire on a group of protesters in South Kashmir's Shopian district. Reports said that at least three persons including a woman were admitted to district hospital in Shopian this evening.
The trio has sustained bullet injuries in their arms and as such is receiving treatment at the Shopian district hospital. The incident occurred when a group of protesters attacked SOG camp in Imam Sahib. After coming under attack SOG personnel opened fire leading to injuries to three persons.
In the Budgam district protests broke out at Bhagat Kanipora, Kralpora, Mochuwa and Narbal. At least four protesters were injured at Kawoosa in this central Kashmir district during clashes with security forces. The injured were brought to Magam Hospital where from two have been shifted to Srinagar. Protests and clashes erupted in the Magam town of this district.
Reports said that clashes erupted in Janglat Mandi area of Anantnag district on Saturday evening. Groups of people mainly youth resorted to stone pelting on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. This was retaliated by teargas shelling and pepper gas shelling. The clashes were on when the last reports came in. Protests also broke out in the Kanelwan area in Bijbehara.
In the Srinagar district clashes broke out between the protesters and police as well as CRPF personnel at many places. Groups of youth carried out stone pelting on police and CRPF at Tengpora, Dandarkhah, Batmaloo, Rawalpora, Nowgam and Peerbagh areas. Protests were also reported from some areas in Ganderbal district and Sopore in Baramulla district. Police and CRPF fired teargas shells in order to disperse the protesters and bring the situation under control.
At the same time the government had to rush police reinforcements from Srinagar to save its spokesperson Naeem Akhtar who was caught in the stone pelting at Sumbal in North Kashmir's Bandipora district. He had gone to Sumbal and other areas to review the law and order situation.
Reports said that while returning to Srinagar, the angry protesters who had created barricades at Maloora, Shilwat and Panzinara areas attacked the minister's cavalcade. Reinforcement was rushed from Srinagar to rescue the minister's cavalcade from protesters. The police had to fire tear gas canisters and pepper gas to disperse the protesters.
Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 53 persons including three policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan.
