| Over stay of lady cops heading Women Cells affects efficiency | | | Raj Sandeep

JAMMU, Aug 4: With domestic violence cases growing against women, the role of lady cops heading women cells in Police Department has become more important to instill enough confidence amongst the victims to approach police without any hitch.
While talking to Early Times, Dr. Rajni Sharma said that the crimes against women in terms of rape, kidnapping and abduction, dowry death, torture by husband, molestation, sexual harassment, importation of girls, and harassment at workplace are the notable domestic crimes being perpetrated against women. To provide succour , a well built system equipped with all facilities is required to be put in place in the Women cells with fixed tenure of lady officer heading cells.
The sources told that lady cop heading Women Cell located at Srinagar has put in more than eight years tenure at a stretch at one place of posting. Similarly is the case of lady cop incharge Women Cell in Jammu who is there for the last more than four years. Sunita Bhat, a house wife said that keeping an officer at one place for such a longer period is humanly difficult rather impossible for the lady cop to do her best constantly for handling cases about crimes against women more effectively and efficiently.
Seema Singh, university student said that it is necessary that some relaxing space is required for the lady officer heading Women cells in Srinagar and Jammu to instill new zeal and zest by posting other available lady officers there so that best results are obtained from the officers for which they are posted in Women Cells.
Rajesh Kumar, a retired person from para military forces pointed out saying that military and para military forces and particularly BSF guarding borders are deployed for duties on rotation basis and replaced by another batch of personnel after some hours. He added that it is done with the purpose to maintain quality performance and high alertness while doing their duties and also to avoid lethargy and monotony in the functioning of forces to extract best possible outcome.
The sources further told that police department of various states and women organizations in the country have made complaint registration process online and now the complaints against women crimes can be registered through e-mail, post, on the website in the states of Gujrat,Rajasthan,Madhya Pardesh,Uttar Pradesh Himachal Pradesh,Punjab, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Karnataka .
The sources said that the facility of online registration of complaints by lady victims be arranged by the state government on the analogy of other states in the country. This will help aggrieved women to shun hesitation for approaching women cells to file FIR against crime which they generally avoid for fear of social stigma. He added that this way victimized women will feel emboldened and comfortable to do the same online while sitting at home.
A retired police officer wishing not to be named said that in order to activate more effectively the working of women cells in the state, the police department should consider fixed tenure of posting , if not earlier shifted, for lady officers heading women cells in the state enabling others to get acquainted and handle cases of various crimes reported in the women cells with fresh energy and equal effectiveness by inducting new talent giving reasonable beak to those having spent longest tenure at one place. |
