SRINAGAR, Aug 4: In what could be described as a 'slap' on the face of authorities concerned, some authorized franchisee of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in Kashmir are selling 'SIM cards' meant for Amarnath pilgrims to locals on exorbitant rates.
Taking undue advantage of the present turmoil and authorities clampdown on telecommunication in Kashmir valley which has been on boil since July 8, the authorized franchise of BSNL have so far sold hundreds of SIM cards to locals which are otherwise meant for the convenience of Amarnath pilgrims.
On one hand the connections being provided at BSNL office here are yet to be activated while on the other activated connections of government run telecom operating company are distributed to locals.
"I get three SIMs and each SIM costs one thousand, I came to know from an employee of the franchisees that the SIMs are being sold to locals are actually meant for the convenience of Amarnath pilgrims," said a new BSNL customer.
He said that the franchise has so far sold hundreds of SIMs to locals after the authorities in Kashmir valley snapped mobile services.
"I had decided to give up the plan of getting BSNL connection after one of my friends told me that it takes around ten days to activate, I changed my mind when another friend advised me to get already activated SIM from a BSNL franchise in Srinagar," another customer said.
He said that he also paid rupees one thousand to get the activated connection without any hectic official formality.
"It was very difficult for me to wait for hours at BSNL office to get the connection, besides the situation in Kashmir at present is disturbed and it is very difficult to move out in this scenario, I didn't waste much of my time and paid rupees one thousand to get an activated SIM," he added.
He claimed that the franchise without any complicatedness continued selling SIM cards to locals that too on exorbitant rates.
