Kashmir unrest is PM Modi's litmus test
8/4/2016 11:51:36 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 4: It was on July 8 that the Indian security forces accomplished a great feat by liquidating Hizbul Mujahideen's Kashmir's poster boy Burhan Wani. Ever since then, Kashmir is on the boil. About 50, mostly stone-pelters, persons have lost their lives and thousands, including security forces personnel, have suffered injuries. Even after 28 days, things have not improved. In fact, things continued to deteriorate with each passing day, which separatists, backed to the hilt by Islamabad issuing a calendar of calendar and provoking, instigating and inducing Kashmiri youth to come on to the roads and attack police stations, other government buildings, CRPF convoys and military installations so that there are more deaths and fire remains burning in the Valley. Situation has worsened to the extent in the Valley to the extent that Lashkar and Hizb terrorists have been holding rallies like the "mainstream" politicians used to hold in Kashmir not so long ago. "mainstream" political leaders like Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami have started saying that they have become "irrelevant". Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's appeals to the people to maintain calm in their own interest and to avoid deaths and injuries are being systematically countered by separatists like Geelani, who call Burhan a martyr and urge others in Kashmir to follow him for the "Kashmiri cause". NC, which is the main opposition party in Kashmir, has also been contributing to the turmoil by holding the Chief Minister's statements on the developing situation in Kashmir squarely responsible for the prevailing situation in the Valley. The role of the Kashmir-based Congress leaders has been no different, notwithstanding the fact that they are not that critical as the NC leaders, especially Omar Abdullah.
The Chief Minister's difficulties have further multiplied because here ministers have virtually gone underground. They are so afraid of facing their own people. As for the party MLAs and MLCs, they too have been hiding themselves; they are nowhere to be seen. The BJP has no role to play in Kashmir, as it has no support base in the Valley. Besides, a number of BJP activists in the Valley have resigned from the party and joined the movement. Why only BJP activists, workers of the NC and the PDP too have joined the movement.
It was expected that Prime Minister Narendra would intervene to retrieve the fast-deteriorating situation in the Valley. Sadly, it has not happened so far. He has not uttered a word on Kashmir and the Kashmir situation. He has also not spoken a word on the Pakistani sinister activities which have only added more fuel to the fire. He has maintained silence for reasons best known to himself.
Things are very alarming and frightening in Kashmir and the people of Jammu and Ladakh are also feeling the pinch. Yesterday, the business leaders of Jammu expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in the Valley and said the Jammu business community has incurred a loss of 1000 crore because of the Kashmir turmoil.
Prime Minister is leader of the country. Kashmir is his litmus test. If he succeeds in tackling the situation, he would earn the nation's goodwill and if he doesn't, the BJP would further lose its ground not only in Jammu, where it has already become very unpopular, but across the nation. The whole nation is looking towards him and his intervention. It would not be out of place to mention here that Jammu and Kashmir is strategically very vital for India. Hence, the Prime Minister has to ensure that the national interests were not mortgaged for purchasing peace in the Valley. He should follow Islamabad which on Wednesday granted special powers to Rangers to tackle the situation in Sind.
