Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 23: The present unrest in Kashmir has virtually come as blessing in disguise for the corrupt and tainted officials of the state as the state government is busy in handling the law & order situation in the valley.
On July 1, 2015 the state government headed by former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed made public a list of more than 60 officials who were considered as dead wood by then dispensation. The government at that time had issued termination orders with respect to these officials with the promise that subsequent lists of tainted officials would also be made public.
However, that did not happen and the remaining lists of tainted officials never came out. As soon as Mehbooba Mufti took over the mantle of chief minister of the state in April this year it was made clear that corruption would not be tolerated. Strong message was sent to the officials that whosoever among them is indulged in corrupt practice action would be taken against them.
With the present government just two months old the Kashmir valley was engulfed with the violence. The valley continues to be on boil since July 8 after Hizbul Mujahideen Commander; Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in an encounter at Bemdoora-Kokernag in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. The unending cycle of violence has virtually provided relief to the tainted and corrupt officials.
There are many officers and officials against whom many cases of corruption are pending in separate anti-graft bodies. With the new dispensation in office it was expected that action would be taken against these people, but nothing of that sort happened since the government got busy in maintaining peace in the valley. As on date the government is busy in grappling to maintain law & order with little attention paid to action against the corrupt officials.
Significantly, the in-action against the corrupt officials has emboldened them and they have broken new records of corruption in the state. Such a situation has encouraged the other officers and officials who are on look out to carry out corrupt practices in their respective departments. Due to all this there is complete anarchy in these departments and the accountability as well as transparency is missing from the scene.
The state government needs to pull up its socks when it comes to taking action against corrupt and tainted government servants. It cannot take shield in the excuse that the people at helm are busy in maintaining law & order in the valley. Failure of the government to act against corrupt would give an impression that the present dispensation is no different from the previous ones when it comes to acting against the tainted officials.
