Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 24: J&K CM and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti was here in Jammu on Tuesday to review progress of ongoing projects in Jammu. She used the opportunity to highlight the nature of Indian state and such Muslim countries as Pakistan, Syria, Turkey and Afghanistan to tell her co-religionists in the state in general and Kashmir Valley in particular that there was no country in the Muslim world where the Muslims enjoy the level of freedom like their co-religionists in India.
The CM told her co-religionists to appreciate the Indian political system and help restore peace in the Valley, which had been under curfew since July 8. She did undertake a good exercise when she compared the state of things in India with the state of things in the Muslim countries. It's a fact that India is the only country where the Muslims enjoy more freedom. The memory of what former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said about the political status of Muslims vis-à-vis Hindus in India is still fresh to be forgotten. He had said the minorities, especially the Muslim minority, had the first right on the Indian resources. The Kashmiri Muslims who are pitching for azadi must listen to her and eschew the path they have been following - path which brought only death and destruction and path, if not abandoned, will bring more destruction and deaths.
She made another very significant statement that punctured the claim of Omar Abdullah and others of his ilk that the entire Muslim population in Kashmir was up in arms against India. She said not all but only 5 per cent people are creating troubles in the Valley and fighting against the Indian state. In fact, she said that majority in Kashmir wanted peace, wanted their children to go to schools and so on and that the present turmoil in Kashmir was the handiwork who didn't like her and her victory.
Her statement that only microscopic minority in Kashmir was involved in the present turmoil should be considered as the most authentic assessment of the nature of the ongoing movement in the Valley. She is not just Chief Minister; she is also the Home Minister, who has many agencies under her control, which keep her informed about everything concerning internal security as well as about the trouble makers whosoever they are and wherever they are.
However, to say all this is not to suggest that all in her party endorsed her view. Take, for example, Mehboob Beg, PDP spokesperson. He on Tuesday said that the present unrest in Kashmir was a "movement" directed not against any political party but against the "Indian political system as a whole". She would do well to rein in such elements in her party who say things which they shouldn't as they contradict her and her views.
