ET Report
Jammu, Aug 24: The inefficiency of Power Development Department could be well gauged from the fact that it has failed to get power supply restored in a village, after lapse of nearly two years, since it was snapped due to damaged transformer.
Moreover, the PDD officials and a legislator, who according to the villagers, were informed several times about the issue, are trying to pass the buck.
Surprisingly, the villagers have been without power supply for the last two years but hefty power bills have been sent to them by the department.
Sharif Din Khan of village Dehri Ralyote, tehsil Manjakote of district Rajouri informed that during the September 2014 floods, the transformer which supplies power to nearly 20 Schedule Tribe families developed technical snag and power supply was snapped.
"We have been running from pillar to post for the past two and half years. We apprised Executive Engineer, Member of Legislative Assembly but the reality is that there is not an iota of change and we have been still without power supply for the last two years", he said, adding that they had to trek several miles for charging their mobile phones."
Criticizing the department he further said that even the letter forwarded by a top politician was taken very casually by the PDD officials.
"For the last two years, there is no power to our houses but in the month of July, we received a bill of Rs. 9264. Why we will pay the bill without consuming any power" he said, adding that even the report of damaged transformer was also registered by PDD but still bills have been coming.
Interestingly, MLA Qamar Choudhary said that these people had not visited him personally but had informed him over phone. On being apprised, if a top politician had forwarded a letter, Qamar Choudhary said that along with letter, the politician should also have released money for the transformer.
On being asked if there was shortage of funds, he evaded the query and said that power supply would be restored shortly in the village.
The Executive Engineer of PDD, Rajouri, Umesh Parihar said that nearly 100 transformers installed under RVVY were damaged in the district. These transformers have been sent for repairs to Jammu workshop.
On being asked if he had received any letter from a top politician he said that his office had forwarded the D.O letter to Chief Engineer office for want of funds. "I will send a reminder to the Chief Engineer office for funds, so that something needful will be done for the villagers", he said.
From the response of Exen and MLA, it appears that the power supply will not restored even in coming years as majority of families are ST and illiterate and are children of "lesser God."
