Death toll in Kashmir violence reaches 70 as Pulwama youth gets killed in firing incident
Police ask people to stay away from processions

SRINAGAR, Aug 26: As one more youth was killed today in the fresh firing incident in south Kashmir's Pulwama district the death toll in the Kashmir violence reached 70.
Meanwhile, authorities imposed strict curfew and restrictions to foil the Eidgah chalo march called by the separatist. Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were arrested after they tried to march towards Eidgah. For the 49th consecutive day normal life was affected in Kashmir due to the imposition of curfew, restrictions and strike call given by the separatists.
Reports said that a youth identified as Shakeel Ahmad Ganaie of Chandipora-Pulwama sustained serious during the clashes between youth and the forces in the Hall area. Shakeel later on succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Clashes broke out in various areas of Pulwama district following Shakeel's death.
Reports of protests and clashes were received from various other areas of the valley. As soon as Friday prayers ended in local mosque at Shopian, clashes erupted between youth and forces in main Chowk Shopian.
At least three persons sustained injuries during the clashes. Three persons were injured during the clashes in Sangam area of Bijbehara in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.
Reports said that scores of people were injured during the clashes between youth and forces in Hygam area of Baramulla district in North Kashmir. As soon as Friday prayers culminated in the locality, a protest rally was organized by the locals was intercepted by the forces. Scores of people were injured in the locality after forces resorted to tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters.
Clashes took place between youth and forces in Bandipora and Kaloosa after the Friday prayers. At least seven persons were injured during clashes between youth and forces in the Sopore area. Many persons got injured when the forces took action against groups of people who carried out protests in various areas of Kupwara district.
Reports said that stone pelting incidents were reported from Mirgund, Nasrullahpora, Adina, Beerwah, Doyen, Repura and Chadoora areas in Central Kashmir's Budgam district. Forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth who were throwing stones on them. This resulted in injuries to many of the protesters.
Reports said that clashes broke out between youth and forces at many places in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district after the Friday prayers. Some of the protesters sustained injuries during the clashes and they were shifted to the hospital for treatment. Clashes also broke out in Giraj, Kujjar and Fatehpora areas in this district.
Meanwhile, police have appealed the people to stay away from processions to avoid loss of life or injury.
In a statement issued from the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, a police spokesman said, "It has been observed that militants make their presence in public protests and on many occasions resort to hurling of grenades and firing. In one such incident in Pulwama on 24-08-2016, 17 police/security force personnel got injured and stand hospitalized. Similarly such incidents have taken place in recent past at Damhal Hanjipora, Kulgam and Shopian."
The statement said the security forces have exercised maximum restraint and not retaliated to avoid civilian casualties.
Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 70 persons including three policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan.
