A welcome stand that security forces appreciate
CM Mufti on deaths in Kashmir

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Aug 26: The army and paramilitaries, including the CRPF, had been at the receiving end since July 8, when they killed Hizb commander Burhan wani in the Kokarnag area of South Kashmir. His liquidation should have been welcomed by one and all in Kashmir and by all the political parties. For, he was a dreaded terrorist with links with Pak-based Lashkar-e-Toiba chief Hafiz Saeed and carried on his head a prize of Rs 10 lakh, but it didn't happen. What happened was to the contrary.
All the Kashmiri parties, all the civil society groups in Kashmir, the so-called Kashmiri intellectuals and opinion makers, human rights activists across the country and so on condemned the killing of Burhan. They glorified his killing. They termed him a hero and a martyr. The result is in front of us. Ever since July 8, Kashmir had been in turmoil. Bandh calls, curfew, security forces-stone pelter clashes, attacks on public property, attacks on CRPF camps, police stations and convoys have become the order of the day in the Valley. The clashes and the well planned attacks on the police and the CRPF led to over 60 killings and injuries to thousands.
The security forces displayed restraint to the maximum extent; they retaliated only when things went out of control and in self-defence. Had the security forces not acted in the manner they did, hundreds and hundreds of our security forces personnel would have lost their precious lives. They acted as the situation was so grave.
The most unfortunate part of the whole situation was the manner in which all the political parties and supporters of the Kashmiri separatist movement and Jihad condemned the security forces and demanded their withdrawal from the Valley. They pained our security forces black and blamed them for the turmoil and so many deaths in Kashmir. None spoke for these brave and committed security forces.
Credit goes to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who in the presence of the visiting Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, and the media set the record straight. She said those who got killed had only invited death by attacking the security forces. She, in fact, gave a clean chit to the security forces something which was needed the most to raise the morale of the security forces.
Without mincing words, she said: "I have repeatedly said that Government of India and State Government and all parties in country should have focus on 95 percent population in Kashmir which wants a peaceful resolution to all issue pertaining Jammu and Kashmir. They don't want to come out and pelt stones nor do they want violence…There were people who 'exploit children and poor' and ask them to attack forces' camps. After the killing people had come out on the roads and the government imposed curfew. Had a child gone to an army camp to buy a toffee? A 15-year-old boy, who attacked a police station in Damhal Hanjipora (in Kulgam), had he gone to buy milk? "This time poor Kashmirs are being used as shields by vested interests and 95 percent people killed are from poor families".
What Mehbooba Mufti said no Kashmiri leader and no leader in Delhi could even imagine. She exposed the undesirables in the required manner and very boldly. And what she said must have, on the one hand, vindicated the security forces' stand that they didn't kill a single innocent Kashmir and on the other, must have rattled all Kashmiri separatists and semi-separatists, who had been attacking the security forces from right and left and through them to New Delhi.
The Army and paramilitary forces must be feeling relieved.
