'Third front' extends full support to Mehbooba

Srinagar, Aug 27: In a surprise development, some of the 'third front' leaders from the mainstream opposition have extended their "full support" to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in her efforts for restoration of normalcy in restive Kashmir vis-vis stability of her government.
Highly placed sources said ahead of her meeting with prime minister Nardendra Modi in the national capital, some senior leaders from the Kashmir-based parties called on Mehbooba at her office here.
At least two leaders, from the opposition, arrived at her highly fortified office, but none of them was stopped at the main gate or elsewhere en route which means security was already informed about the arrival of the "special guests", who don't need to be stopped for any questioning or frisking which otherwise mandatory for entry to the CM's office.
One of the leaders, who heads his own small party, represents a constituency in Budgam in the legislative assembly, whereas another, a north Kashmir politician, had lost the previous assembly elections.
The closed-door meeting, which lasted around an hour, brought a phenomenal shift in the policy of the visiting politicians, who are often seen as "third front" of mainstream politics in Kashmir.
These leaders, who till a few days ago were issuing statements against the state government, assured Mehbooba of "full support in all her endeavours." "Madam you don't worry, we are with you in all your endeavours... You go ahead and kindly meet Modi ji," sources quoted the leaders as having told Mehbooba before she flew to New Delhi.
Sources said one of the leaders told Mehbooba that they were also in touch with some leaders of an opposition party to make them understand the sensitivity of the situation so that their party 'doesn't issue any irresponsible statement'. The support from the third front is being seen as a major sigh of relief for the PDP-BJP alliance, struggling to restore law and order in the valley. Insiders said most of the PDP leaders, including ministers, had been unable to deliver the way Mehbooba wanted them to during the prevalent unrest. Whereas she wanted her ministers and other party men to be connected to the grassroots in their respective constituencies for a public outreach, most of them sat back in their highly-fortified and cozy villas in the summer capital.
The height of alleged callousness is that three ministers from Kashmir didn't attend Independence Day celebrations at any district headquarters citing "threat to personal security."
Amid all this, Mehbooba has been struggling to strengthen her party and the government alike. Sources said she was set to meet more such faces in the coming days.
Despite repeated attempts, the CM could not be contacted for her comments.
