Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 27: In 1946, the then NC president and critics of Dogra rule and the Treaty of Amritsar of 1846, Sheikh Abdullah, gave a call for "quit Kashmir Movement. Actually, he and other radical Islamists launched the movement. The objective of the movement was to bring to an end the Dogra rule in Kashmir (not in Jammu and Kashmir) and establish an independent Kashmir state. The Government of Maharaja Hari Singh acted against the agents of hate and was put behind bars.
Sheikh Abdullah and his party were against the Treaty of Amritsar. Their view was that the Dogras of Jammu "purchased the life, honour and dignity" of Kashmiri Muslims, Their demand was throw out the Treaty lock, stock and barrel.
It is, however, a different issue that after India became independent of London and Jammu & Kashmir acceded to India, Sheikh Abdullah changed his stand on the Treaty of Amritsar and retained all the laws which he had opposed between 1932 and 1946, the 1927 state subject laws included.
Abdullah changed his stand because JL Nehru, the foe of Maharaja Hari Singh, was at his beck and call. The nature of the conspiracy that Nehru and Sheikh hatched both against India and the people of Jammu and Ladakh could be seen from the fact that Nehru Government not only made Maharaja Hari Singh to abdicate his authority and transfer political power from Jammu to Kashmir but also incorporated in the Indian Constitution provisions which drove Jammu and Kashmir away from the Constitutional and political organization from India. And ever since then, the nation and the people of Jammu and Ladakh have been paying through their nose.
The point is that the Kashmiri leadership now wants not just Kashmir to go out of India but Jammu and Ladakh as well. They do talk of the people of the state but want only the Kashmiri Muslims' aspirations to be fulfilled and what these aspirations are everyone in the state and rest of the country are aware of. They want a separate and independent country; not just a Muslim state on the territories of India.
On Friday, Pakistani agent Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was arrested by the police as he had threatened to march towards the Army Headquarters, Badami Bagh, Srinagar, along with his followers, had sent a letter to the army to quit not just Kashmir, but the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir.
It appears Geelani has turned mad. No one cares for him and other Kashmiri leaders and what they say. They are persona non grata for the nationalists in the state and in the rest of the country. But more than that, 2016 is not 1946 or 1947. The things have changed. The Indian nation and the nationalists in the state are determined to defeat Pakistan and these Kashmiri separatists.
The problem is with the Indian State. It is this which has not really acted against these goons and disturbers of peace. The time is ripe for stringent action against them. Not to bring them to justice would be only to allow them to further muddy the waters in Kashmir.
