Rajouri, Aug 27: In yet another case of "favouritism", the Forest Department has reclaimed around 2000 kanals of forestland from the poor famers in Sunderbani area here whereas the influential politicians occupying the government land have been spared.
Sources told Early Times the Forest department has started a drive to reclaim its land from villagers from eight villages falling under two Panchayats Langar and Upper Hathal as a part of its nationwide drive, the- Compensatory Afforestation Management and Planning Authority(CAMPA).
The poor people, who would utilize the land to feed their cattle, grow crops or collect firewood, have been deprived of the resource. "We had not constructed any buildings on the land but would utilize to manage two square meals a day. But we have been denied of this right by the oppressive regime," the villagers said.
On the other hand the land under the occupation of some workers and politicians of the ruling BJP have been spared. Official sources said around 500 kanals of land which lies with the villagers has been left untouched due to influence they wield. "BJP regime has made our lives miserable. In the name of bringing transparency, they proved to be the worst in unleashing a reign of favouritism," the villagers said.
They said how could the Forest department have two yardsticks for the people. "If land has been snatched from the poor people, it should have been snatched from the BJP leaders and workers as well," said a delegation of villagers asking the Union Forest Minister and MOS in the Prime Minister's office Dr Jitendra Singh to look into the matter.
When contacted a senior official in the Forest Department declined to comment over the issue.
Sources said a senior minister had to the officials of Forest Department not to take action against the BJP leaders or other party cadres.
