US to renew campaign in support of India securing NSG membership
8/31/2016 9:09:03 PM
Washington feels slighted by granting India membership of the NSG when the US was quite in favour of India's entry into the NSG.If India failed to secure membership of the NSG it was because of the opposition from China.Naturally any Chinese plan may provoke Washington and this is what has happened in the case of India's failure to get membership of the NSG.In fact China took keen interest in sabotaging India's case and ensured support from various countries against India. The latest reports indicate that the U.S. will push for India's membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group when the issue is taken up later this year at the "highest levels", U.S. Ambassador to India Richard Verma has said. Ahead of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's arrival in Delhi, which coincides with Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar's visit to Washington , Verma has said, "We were disappointed in [the NSG decision in June 2016], but will continue to work constructively with India and all NSG members on India's accession in the months ahead." Washington has pushed strongly on this issue with NSG members at the highest levels of the US government. The Obama administration will hold its last round of the Strategic and Commercial Dialogue (S&CD) with India on Tuesday, when Mr. Kerry and U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker will meet with their counterparts Sushma Swaraj and Nirmala Sitharaman in Delhi.Officials on both sides confirmed that the NSG membership issue will be discussed, including the hope within the government that the U.S. will take up India's case at the "highest levels", i.e. between President Obama and President Xi,Jinping possibly during their upcoming meeting at G-20 next week.In 2008, former President George Bush's phone call to former Chinese President Hu Jintao swung a waiver from the NSG in India's favour. Well all depends on Pakistan"s stand on the issue. If Islamabad continues to oppose India's case it may put added pressure on Beijing to secure support from other NSG members so that India once again failed to secure membership of the NSG.Finally it is going to be a battle of wits between the Chinese President XI and the US President Barrack Obama. It is going to be an interesting battle of wits between China and the US.As far as the attitude of Pakistan is concerned it may place added pressure on Beijing to sabotage India's case, that too at a time when the relations between India and Pakistan have touched a new low. That the ties between New Delhi and Islamabad st and on the verge of rupture following incidents of violence in Kashmir in which 70 people have been killed and several thousand people, including 3,000 security personnel injured after a militant commander Burhan Wani was killed by the security forces.India has blamed Pakistan for fuelling unrest and violence in Kashmir and Pakistan wants India to resolve the Kashmir issue.
