Early Times Report

Rajouri, Sept 27: On May 19, PHE Minister Sham Lal had visited the tension-gripped Rajouri town and after several meetings with the district administration, prominent members of both the communities, met with the members of minority community at Sanatan Dharam Sabha and assured them stringent action against the miscreants involved in arson and stone pelting activities.
He also requested the minority community traders to open their shops/ business establishments and assured them of stringent action against the miscreants within seven days. On his assurance, shops/business establishments were opened in the evening and district administration had also lifted the day curfew.
Those who led the agitation after September 14 incident, after which the authorities imposed the curfew within the limit of Rajouri Municipality, also informed the Minister that they will re-consider their decision after seven days and will close their shops if the administration failed to take any action against the miscreants actually involved in the communal clashes, arson and stone pelting activities.
"More than seven days have passed but the police have failed to arrest the miscreants identified for creating communal tension and for their involvement in the arson and stone pelting activities. Even those who led the agitation have also forgotten to review their stand" said a reliable source.
He added that old city leadership is dominated by the BJP activists and BJP is coalition partner in the State Government.
Moreover, BJP succeeded in defusing the situation for their political interests and now they are silent over the issue and don't want to exploit the situation.
On the other hand, according to highly placed sources, police have prepared dossiers for slapping Public Safety Act on few noted miscreants from both the communities to send strong signals for the trouble creators in the future.
"But political pressure has become a major hurdle in this matter and still the administration has been holding meetings to take decision in this matter. District administration reportedly don't want to face Kishtwar like situation that has emerged after the arrest of few prominent members of the society" said the source.
Shabir Ahmed Bhat, Deputy Commissioner said that his office has not received yet any such recommendations (dossier for slapping of PSA) from District Police office.
On September 14 after some misunderstanding over the identity of the sacrificed animal, communal tension had gripped the town and miscreants had damaged some shops, set on fire one stationery shop in the old city and also pelted stones on the security forces.
Police have registered five cases in this matter under FIR Nos 598 to 602/2016 under various sections of RPC.
In this matter a Naib tehsildar and a Zonal Sports Officer were also placed under suspension and attached with the office of Divisional Commissioner for their involvement in instigating the mob instead dispersing/controlling them.
Police have arrested about 10 persons in this matter but those identified in the CCTV footage are still out of reach for the police.
