Early Times Report

Budgam, Sept 27: The Municipal Committee (MC) Budgam has finally decided to undertake scientific waste management in the town to manage its garbage which has been a matter of serious concern for authorities as well as local public. Municipal Committee Budgam will be the first town committee in Jammu & Kashmir which would undertake this kind of work by collecting garbage from door to door and segregating it at the source. The committee further plans to make bio-fertilizer from the biodegradable / wet waste for which local district administration has provided a piece of land to the Municipal Committee where composting pits have been constructed.
Details available with Early Times reveal that Directorate of Urban Local Bodies had invited Expression of Interest (EOI) from registered firms / companies few months back for undertaking scientific solid waste management on pilot basis in Budgam. As per reliable sources in Directorate of Urban Local Bodes M/S Basix Municipal Waste Ventures which is an Indore based company having its office in Srinagar has been finally shortlisted for this pilot project which would cost around Rupees Two Lakh Fourty Thousand (2.40 Lakhs) for 3 months. Officials in ULB Directorate Srinagar say that within a few days the work would be started in some 5 municipal wards of Budgam town that would benefit the local population of the town. A senior official of the ULB Directorate said that it is a low cost activity and if the said pilot project works , the department would like to have similar activities in other towns as well.
Early Times had filed few news reports earlier on the non disposal of municipal solid waste in Budgam . Due to continuous unrest the work had suffered a lot. From last three months local municipal authorities in Budgam , Chadoora and Magam towns have only been able to lift the garbage from residential areas.
As the existing garbage dumping site in Budgam town having been fully chocked , the new composting unit will be prove to be helpful for the local Municipal Authorities There is an urgent demand of having a new dumping sites in different towns of the district says a senior officer in Directorate of ULB Srinagar. Due to absence of a scientific solid waste management system in Budgam , Magam and Chadoora towns in particular locals have been urging upon the authorities to come to their rescue.
The existing garbage dumping site near Budgam town has very less space to accommodate more and more solid waste collected from the 13 municipal wards of the town. According to reports district administration has already identified a place in the town outskirts to be used as garbage dumping site, but the locals living around that area (Patwaaw) are against such move of the Govt. The residents living in Patwaaw say that instead of creating a garbage dump yard they would prefer that Govt constructs some educational institution in the area.
