Early Times Report

Hiranagar, Sept 28: Prime Minister of India and Union Environment department jointly launched a scheme ' Save water- save life' with the aim to save water and to mitigate the scarcity of drinking water supply in required areas but it appears that the scheme has been entirely discarded by Public Health Department PHE Kathua Division.
Millions of gallon fresh water gets waste every day in Hiranagar from PHE artisan well, dug wells, Tube wells and defunct water pipes but ironically despite of having knowledge of all these, PHE officials act like spectators , perform duty without care about wastage of water.
Right 6 km from Hiranagar towards kandi area, dozens of villages face scarcity of water, stage protest demonstration for a drop of water, land gets dry, hard to live but there is no check point installed by PHE in Hiranagar town to control wastage and channelize water besides shifting to such needy areas.
There are 14 water points including number of Artisan well, dug well, tube well in merely 2 km radius of Hiranagar town whereas excess water supply resulting wastage of water even from the premises of pumping cum tanker filling station operating under Water supply scheme Karyana.
Instead of raising voice for drinking water, People of Hiranagar staged series of protest demonstration in previous months to control excess water supply while demanding repair of water pipes, leakage of water from artisan wells, dug wells & tube wells etc.
Shakti Kunj, an NGO raised the issue before PHE Kathua Division, DDC Kathua, submitted memorandum to Governor, Chief Justice of J&K, filed a case against negligent attitude of PHE officials in Court to save the wastage of fresh water from defunct machineries of PHE deptt.
Lakhwinder Singh, a volunteer of Shakti Kunj, informed that the issue has been raised before concerned authority as pure water flow from drainage too but nothing has been done.
He said their organization organized awareness camps, rallies and submitted memorandums to save fresh water and control on leakage of water but PHE officials did not give patient hearing to our demand.
People appealed both Union & state governments to constitute a team to verify the wastage of water , control the wastage, channelize water, install check points and strict action against officials who ignore the wastage of millions of gallon fresh water every day.
Shakti Kunj alleged that renovation funds had been dispersed from government treasury in number of times but PHE did not take any initiative to renovate the artisan wells etc and left people on their own. The NGO appealed severe inquire and action against tainted officers besides repair of PHE machinery.
