Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 28: The much hyped cable car started at Makhdoom Sahab (R.A) hill lock during NC-Congress government according to locals has desecrated the sanctity of century's old revered shrine as the same is being used by unmarried couples for `immoral' activities.
The residents claimed that the government before starting the cable car should have seriously considered its ramifications so that the shrines reverence was not flawed.
"We want the cable car to be used by the devotees only who are physically inept to reach the shrine. This area has already been tainted by some people who have illegally encroached the lower side of the area and if the cable car is thrown open for everyone then the area will definitely turn into a virtual prostitution hub," Mohammad Ashraf Makhdoomi a local told Early Times.
He said that government must ensure that unmarried couples who often find chances to indulge in discreditable acts must not be allowed to sit in the car and the local Intizamia Committee should seriously test out the intensions of the people.
"Our area has been polluted by some people who openly sell liquor and hashish in the area, we frequently approached the police for help but to no avail. The cable car started by previous government has become a safe haven for smugglers and prostitutes,'' Ghulam Mustafa Baig another local said.
Pertinently, the cable car at an estimated cost of 6.50 crores was successfully tested by the concerned authorities on April 12th 2013.
The horizontal length of the ropeway is 541 meters with 4 cabins in each cluster with a capacity and design of 225 at Max speed of 4m/sec. The ropeway type is mono cable jigback. The cabins are fully enclosed with manual doors. The one way time from the base station to the upper station is 3.2 minutes approximately.
Talking to Early Times noted Kashmiri poet and social activist, Zarif Ahmad Zarif while lambasting the government for its failure to curb the menace of escalating social waywardness in the valley said that cable car must be used by the physically challenged people to ensure that the shrines reverence is not spoiled.
"Mostly unmarried couples are indulging in shameful acts and no one seems to be strict in controlling this menace. If the cable car has been introduced in the area to make the journey of the physically challenged and old age people easy, then this must not be used for business purpose," he added.
