Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 29: The authorities Thursday sounded a high alert across Line of Control and the International border in Jammu and Kashmir to deal with any eventuality in the wake of India's surgical attack in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) on terrorist launching pads.
Sources said that though it wasn't a war like situation on the LoC, but "tensions were high on the both sides." "Given the surgical strike carried out by the Army against the terrorist launching pads in PoK, there is every possibility that Pakistan may play some mischief. We are ready to deal with any eventuality," sources in the Army said.
A senior Army officer, wishing not to be named told Early Times said that troops along the LoC in J&K and also on the international border have been asked to maintain high vigil and remain alert. "There is a possibility that Pakistani army may help infiltrators to sneak into this side to carry out another Uri-type attack. We have put our men on high alert, briefed them about the situation prevailing on the diplomatic level and also asked them to leave nothing to chance," he said. "Our men are ready to give a befitting reply to any Pakistani reaction."
He, however, said there was no war like situation on the LoC or at the IB. "Tempers are of course high on both sides. We haven't moved the troops yet, but have asked civilians in Punjab living in 10km radius of the border stay away and to take shelter in safer areas. Troops deployed on the LoC in Kashmir and IB in Jammu has been directed to give an apt reply in case situation turns ugly," he said.
Asked whether situation was heading towards a war, he said: "We hope situation won't take a turn ugly. But if the order side would push us to war, we would face it."
He said the Indian army believes in negotiations first. "Even after war, things are settled through negotiations. Let's hope there is a calm and 2003 ceasefire agreement is upheld," he said.
Top Army official said that there is no plan to continue the anti-militancy operations by the Indian army in PoK. "But yes, we are ready to face any eventuality. He admitted that there was a surgical strike from the Indian side, but situation is so far alright on the LoC and IB in J&K," he said.
He refuted the reports and they have asked the people living closer to LoC and IB in J&K to shift towards safer places. "There is no such direction so far," the officer said. "The Indian army didn't carry an air strike on the launching pads in PoK. It was a ground attack and a clean operation to send a message to Pakistan that there is no scope for terror."
Pertinently, tension between India and Pakistan escalated after 18 soldiers were martyred in an audacious terrorist attack at Uri in north Kashmir and it is believed that "surgical strike was a clear response to Uri."
Sources in the Army ruled of mobilisation of troops from base camps to LoC. "No such activity is going on in Kashmir. But yes, all options are open and can be explored depending upon how the situation shapes up," they said. "The situation is being monitored on the hourly basis by the Army's Delhi headquarters and directions would come all the way from Delhi after thorough consultations at the top level."
