Authorities foil Lal Chowk Chalo call by imposing curfew, restrictions in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Sept 30: Authorities imposed curfew and restrictions in some areas of Kashmir valley in order to thwart the Lal Chowk Chalo given by the separatists as part of their protest programme. The situation by and large remained peaceful in the valley with protests reported from some areas.
Separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik had asked people of Kashmir to march towards Lal Chowk on Thursday evening and hold protests. They had also asked the people to offer the congregational Friday prayers on the road stretching between Dalgate and Batamaloo.
In order to thwart this programme the state government imposed curfew in most parts of downtown Srinagar and some areas of the uptown Srinagar. Curfew was imposed in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar and Safa Kadal in downtown Srinagar and Maisuma and Batmaloo police stations in uptown Srinagar.
Elsewhere, restrictions under Section 144 were imposed in order to ensure that no untoward incident takes place especially after the Friday prayers. Restrictions were severe at district headquarters like Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Budgam and Ganderbal. Movement of people as well as private traffic was also restricted by the government at the other sensitive places across the length and breadth of the Kashmir valley. In the Srinagar district protests were reported from Batmaloo, Abi Guzar, Barzulla, Hyderpora, Rambagh, Dalgate, Kani Kadal, Chota Bazar, Chattabal, Nowgam, Natipora and Rainawari areas. There are reports that security forces resorted to aerial firing in Batamaloo in order to broke the protests. Some of the persons sustained injuries during the day long clashes.In the North Kashmir reports of clashes and protests came from Hajin, Papachan, Saderkote and adjacent areas of Bandipora district. Clashes also broke out in Nadihal area of Baramulla district and also in some areas of old town Baramulla. Clashes broke out in the Goriwan locality of Bijbehara area in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Dozens of protesters were injured in these clashes.
According to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir it has been said that situation across the valley remained under control today although stray incidents of stone pelting were reported. As a precautionary measure curfew was imposed in few police stations of Srinagar today while all other areas of the valley remained curfew free, the statement said.
According to the statement, after Friday prayers stray stone pelting incidents were reported from Sopore, Bandipora and Srinagar. "Miscreants in their attempt to disturb the situation assembled on roads and pelted stones on police and security force deployments," it said adding they were chased away by security forces using some force. The statement said that the police in its continuous and sustained drive against miscreants arrested 49 such individuals involved in different offences of disturbing the situation in different parts of the valley.
