Kashmiri leaders' silence on surgical strikes intriguing
10/8/2016 12:04:51 AM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 7: More than one week has passed when the Dogra and Bihari Ghataks of the army conducted surgical strikes across the LoC and inside PoJK and dismantled 7 to 8 terror launch pads killing more than 30 terrorists, but none of the mainstream Kashmiri leaders has till date complimented their valour and patted their backs.
On the contrary, the top brass of the political leaders across India are fighting a tough battle of upmanship to earn brownie points and earning the label of most patriotic leader in the country.
Poster war has already erupted in poll bound state of Uttar Pradesh and two national parties BJP and Congress are fighting a bitter war of words to consolidate their grip over their votaries.
Back home in Jammu and Kashmir such a behaviour is expected from the Kashmiri separatists but when mainstream politicians take recourse to competitive separatism raises questions on their credibility and credentials. It is not a secret that separatists' heart beat for Pakistan but what are the compulsions of Kashmiri politicians like Farooq Abdullah, his brother Mustafa Kamal and similar other leaders that instead of extending full suppor to the Army they have turned their backs and appearing to woo separatists in the Valley.
None of the "mainstream" political leader in the Kashmir valley congratulated the armed forces for the successful surgical operations in Pak occupied Jammu Kashmir (PoJK). These leaders, however, tried to raise their voices in support of internal dialogue to bring the state out of the mess. NC president Farooq Abdullah said so. JKPCC chief GA Mir said so. NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamal not only batted for India-Pakistan dialogue but also accused India of causing Uri attack on September 18, which resulted in the martyrdom of our 19 jawans. He even questioned the entry of the Indian Ghataks into PoJK saying "India violated the sovereignty of Pakistan". He forgot to say that PoJK was legally part of India.
As for Farooq Abdullah, he also appealed for restraint and upholding the ceasefire of 2003 post surgical operations. He never advocated restraint when Pakistan backed terrorists killed 19 Indian soldiers.
This approach on the part of leaders like Farooq Abdullah doesn't go well with the suffering and bleeding nation. The Nc ruled the state for decades. Right now, it is the main opposition party in the Assembly. Similarly, the NC remained part of the BJP-led NDA Government and Congress-led UPA Government. Omar Abdullah was minister in the Vajpayee Government and Farooq Abdullah in the Government of Manmohan Singh.
Leaders like Farooq Abdullah are required to play positive role in the Valley so that peace returned there. If they feel their politics of competitive secessionism will help them restore the lost political space, they are living in a world of the past. They have to examine the circumstances which led to their defeat the victory of the PDP in Kashmir and of the BJP in Jammu and Ladakh and change their style of functioning.
