Rajouri, Oct 22: Even as police is expected to crack the cases of theft and related crimes to ensure a sense of security among the people, the police station Sunderbani here is asking the complainants to go and nab the criminals only because the cops are unwilling to venture out.
For Anil Kumar whose mobile phone worth Rs 25,000 was stolen, registering complaint with the SHO Sunderbani only added to his loss. He was made to make multiple visits to the Thana, on which this man had to spend Rs 5000 on travel.
Finally when the complainant got annoyed and complained before police that his hard earned money was going waste in futile trips to Thana, the SHO told him to "help the police by nabbing the thief and bring him to police station." The complainant stopped visiting the police station thereafter, he said.
In another case, a mobile phone shop was targeted by thieves some time back and goods worth Rs two lakh were stolen. Its owner Ajay Kumar is waiting for the police to crack the case since. Official sources said in the past around a year, some two dozen cases of the theft remain unsolved adding that the police was unwilling to undertake investigations properly. The crime graph in the area has only risen.
Sources said the police slumber has gone so high that girls who suffer from eve-teasing avoid going to police station to register their complaint.
Peoples Democratic Party leader and area president Manoj Kumar said it was shameful that police fails to even check eve-teasing what to talk of thefts. "Why do our sisters and daughters need to visit police station to make complaint of eve-teasing when this crime is quite visible on the roads. Isn't it the duty of the police to ensure that girls move around freely and safety?" he asked. He accused the concerned SHO of being habitual of staying back in the Thana alone. "He is only visible when some BJP leader or senior official visits the area. Otherwise, people don't know him," the PDP leader said.
The people said amid rising cases of thefts and eve-teasing they feel insecure and that Director General of Police must take note of the problems faced by the inhabitants of his area. "Police should hold regular meetings with the area locals," the inhabitants said. When contacted SSP Rajouri SulaimanChowdhary said the matter would be looked into. "I have recently assumed charge… I will definitely look into the matter as there's no question that people should suffer," he told Early Times.
