Employees' termination row: 9 EJAC leaders arrested in Srinagar

Srinagar, Oct 22: Jammu and Kashmir Police today foiled a meeting of Employee Joint Action Committee (EJAC), called to chalk out a plan against termination of employees for alleged anti-national activities, and arrested nine of its top leaders. Meanwhile, EJAC has called for a day long strike on October 25 against the government's decision of terminating the employees.
"We were holding a meeting in Public Health Engineering (PHE) department about our strategy to press the government to withdraw its order of terminating 12 government employees," EJAC Vice President Sbahir Ahmad Langu told .
However, a police party barged into the meeting hall and arrested our top nine leaders besides ransacked the place and harassed us," he alleged.
The EJAC Vice President, however, said such acts will not deter their resolve to seek justice for the employees who have been wrongfully terminated.
He said committee in consultation with all unions of government offices have decided to observe a day long strike in all offices on October 25.
"If our demand was not met, we will intensify our agitation and go on an indefinite strike. We will soon hold a meeting of all the unions and association of government departments in the state and chalk out our further plan of action," he said.
The Jammu and Kashmir government recently terminated the services of about a dozen employees, particularly from education department, for their alleged involvement in the unrest since July 9, a day after Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani and two other militants were killed in an encounter in Anantnag. However, subsequent violence later left 86 persons, mostly youth, death in security force and police action.
About 10000 persons, including government employees besides students were, arrested by the police in the valley for participating in protests or inciting trouble.
Official sources said that intelligence agencies have forwarded a list of 40 employees alleging that they were participating in anti national activities.
