Jammu, Oct 23: The tall claims of the Education Minister of bringing holistic change in education system in Government schools have proved mere hollow slogans with the involvement of government teachers in running Mid Day Meal scheme, which is adversely affecting the teaching process.
Sources told Early Times that as per Mid Day Meal guidelines (Quality and Safety Aspects) the teachers under no circumstances were to be assigned responsibilities that would impede or interfere with learning; but in sheer violation of Mid Day Meal norms, the teachers have been engaged in running the scheme in Government Schools across the State. "Thousands of teachers are involved in running MDM scheme thus affecting the teaching/ learning process adversely," said teachers preferring anonymity.
They further said that the students of the primary schools under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) are the worst sufferers as already these schools are run by few and with the engagement of teacher in this scheme they are unable to take classes.
They further said that they had expressed their concern with the higher authority in this regard that the studies of the students were getting affected but the concerned ZEO, CEO have given strict and clear instructions that the study might get affected but the mid day meal scheme should not be hampered at any cost as their efficiency is evaluated with the successful running of the scheme.
The most intriguing part of this scheme is that the teachers have to spend from their own pocket to purchase grocery from shops to provide the meal to the students which is not reimbursed at many occasions putting extra financial burden on the teachers. "The total expenditure made by the teachers in a particular year from their pocket, only 80% of it is reimbursed and the loss of 20% expenditure have to borne by them which is never taken care by the department," they alleged.
