Banihal, Oct 24: The ongoing under construction four lane project of Jammu Srinagar National Highway which was the dream project for thousands of unemployed youths from Banihal to Udhumpur who had anchored their hopes to get skilled and unskilled jobs but to their surprise the things have not changed for them as the construction companies are using 'contractor system'.
According to sources, various construction companies engaged with the construction of this four lane project instead of working themselves have engaged small contractors on sub let bases who are getting workers through 'contractor system' which has eluded the locals from getting jobs..
Hundreds of unemployed youths of district Ramban who were hoping for getting jobs in these companies now look disappointed for failing to get jobs as the contractors often prefer the resources from out of the state.
In Banihal stretch highway, the Construction company, Nauyouga has reportedly engaged with tunnel project and some bridges have adjusted some local youths and land holders in the company, sources said adding, "But work from Banihal town to Kharpora- the two kms stretch was allotted to a Company M/s Ramkey Limited which allegedly has outsourced its work to contractors who not only are paying pea nuts to the workers and prefer the worker from outside the state which allegedly is cheaper.
Sources said, "From Kharpora Banihal to Ramban- a stretch of 30 kms was allotted to Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) which has engaged local contractors instead of working itself while Ramban to Udhampur stretch was allotted to M/s Gaymen India Limited which also had sublet the work to local contractors.
However construction of Nashri Chanani tunnel was allotted to a foreign based company Lighton Willingson which only doled maximum employment to local as per agreement with the allotee and the state government.
Sources said that this not only has benefited the youths of the area with better job opportunities but also has improved the socio -economic status of locals. However it abandoned the work some two years back and the same work was allotted to Beigh Construction Company (BCC) which also accommodated unemployed youths of the area.
Locals alleged that some companies which are working through sublet system deliberately are avoiding to engage local youths in the construction work. Local people and unemployed have demanded from State government, district administrations and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to intervene into the matter and direct concerned companies to provide jobs to the local youths in this project .
