BSF jawan, 6-year-old boy killed as Pak forces pound villages in Jammu sector

Jammu, Oct 24: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan and a six-year old boy were killed while a BSF officer and another jawan were among six others injured as Pakistan Rangers used mortars and heavy machine gun fire through Sunday night in Jammu sector.
At least 25 Indian posts and over 18 villages were targeted along the international border in RS Pura, Kanachak, Arnia, Akhnoor and Pargwal sectors of Jammu district. The shelling also left 35 cattle dead and over 200 injured. The high intensity attack came barely three days after the BSF said it had killed seven Pakistani Rangers personnel and a terrorist in firefights through the day across Bobiya area of Hiranagar in Katuha district, Samba in Samba district and Pargwal in Jammu district The BSF retaliation had followed the death of constable Gurnam Singh in a sniper attack in Bobiya.
On Monday too, the BSF claimed it responded in equal measure.
BSF Jammu Frontier DIG Dharmender Pareekh said, "Head constable Shushil Kumar, a native of Pehova in Kurukshetra district of Haryana sustained a splinter injury in his chest while retaliating to the Pakistani fire. He was immediately evacuated to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Jammu where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at 12.30 am on Monday".
The jawan had sustained grievous injuries at Sangral post in the RS Pura sector. "We salute his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty," added Pareekh. Pakistan targeted almost all posts north of Suchetgarh in RS Pura to Chenab River in Akhnoor. Pareekh said the BSF returned the fire in equal measure and inflicted heavy damage to the Pakistanis.
BSF ASI RD Puri was also injured in the skirmishes at Abdullian post. ASI Puri of 127 Battalion hails from Sivan district in Bihar. The 48-year-old officer has been admitted at GMCH in Jammu. A BSF jawan Ayyappa Babu of 33 Battalion also suffered bullet injuries in his left leg at a post in Chenab River area in Pargwal sector.
"Pargwal, Gharkhal and Kanachak witnessed heavy firing including mortars by Pakistan," a local from RS Pura said. Pakistan rained 82 mm and 120 mm mortars at Korotana Khurd, Bidhipur, Rattan, Abdullian, Chanduchak, Hansuchak, Sai Devigarh, Sai Nikowal, Joura Farm and many other forward villages. Jammu deputy commissioner Simrandeep Singh said, "A six-year old boy Vikcy died and a girl suffered fracture in her leg after a shell exploded during wee hours on Monday at Lalyal in Kanachak sector Akhnoor sub division in Jammu district. They belonged to a migrant family of labourers from Bihar, he said. Meanwhile he added that monetary help will be provided through Red Cross to Border firing victims who have been admitted in GMC Jammu today.
"At least 35 cattle have also died and over 200 others were injured in Pak firing and shelling," he added. Three injured have been identified as Parkasho Devi, 62, wife of Fangu Ram of Gajansoo, Krishana Devi, 65, wife of late Chain Dass of Treva and Girdhari Lal, 65 of Sai in RS Pura.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's ISI posted on its website said that a Pakistani civilian Muhammad Latif of village Janglora and a minor girl Haniya died while seven civilians were injured in Indian firing and shelling in Harpal, Pukhlian and Charwah sectors. Within past 12 hours Pakistan violated the ceasefire agreement twice and 39 times since India's surgical strikes on September 29.
Amid the flare up along the borders, BSF has foiled three infiltration attempts in the past five days.
