Srinagar, Oct 25: In view of the surge in militant attacks on security forces in Kashmir valley, police is installing more CCTV cameras at different locations in Srinagar and especially in and around the police control room Srinagar to improve the security system.
Police sources told Early Times that during a meeting chaired by top officials of the police, it was noted that more CCTV cameras are being installed at important locations in Srinagar city and in and around the control room.
" Specific stress was laid on installation of more hi-tech CCTVs around the police control room where these days most of the additional deployment of police and other security forces are stationed," sources said.
They said that the process of installing the CCTVs will be beginning soon. "The CCTVs have already been erected in Lal Chowk and Dalgate area of city. These will be installed at some other key locations in the city," a senior police official said.
Sources said that cameras are installed under police modernization scheme approved by Government of India (GoI) to increase the surveillance. "The hi-tech cameras are being installed as part of electronic surveillance to detect movement of suspected persons and identity trouble makers. The cameras would be monitored from the Special Surveillance Centre established in the Police Control Room," sources said.
In the past cameras were installed in Srinagar to increase surveillance of militant activities like grenade throwing and hit-and-run cases.
The cameras were installed at strategic locations in the city and according to police had helped them crack several militancy related cases like the Lal Chowk suicide attack in January 2010.
Police has used CCTVs to identify protesters at several places in Srinagar and produced video footage in courts as evidence of their involvement in "anti-establishment activities".
The cameras have also helped police solve many crime and accident cases in Srinagar.
One of the top police officials said that the surveillance would ensure comprehensive and round the clock security cover in the city. "Besides this, an ultra modern control room has been set up at SSP office to monitor the feed of these cameras and further coordinating with PCR for prompt response," he said.
He pointed out that CCTV surveillance paired with PCR mobile team will lead to immediate response, effective decision making, easy accessibility, high visibility, guarding scene of crime till arrival of force from respective Police station, clear communication& proactive approach in tackling crime and other police situations.
