Early Times Report
srinagar, Oct 25: Despite having no mandate to carry out talks with separatists a group of 'respectable' from New Delhi today dropped in at the residence of some separatists and carried out deliberations with them in order to break the 'logjam' that is prevalent in Kashmir these days.
Since the members of non-official delegation said that they have come in their individual capacity and do not represent Government of India it is quite certain that today's exercise would be meaningless vis-à-vis in breaking the stalemate. In other words it can be said that there seems to be no end to the unrest that is going on in Kashmir following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani.
The non-official delegation consists of former union minister for external affairs and finance, Yashwant Sinha, first Chief Information Commissioner of India, Wajahat Habibullah, Executive Director Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation, Sushobha Bharve, former Air Vice Marshal, Kapil Kak and journalist Bharat Bhushan.
The members of non-official delegation after their arrival from New Delhi first dropped in at the residence of chairman of hard-line faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani at Hyderpora and carried out meeting with him. This was followed by meetings with chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman Muslim Conference, Professor Abdul Gani Bhat and chairman Democratic Freedom Party, Shabir Ahmad Shah.
Emerging out after their meetings with Geelani and Mirwaiz the delegation members including Sinha and Habibullah said that they had come to Kashmir to share the pain and of people living in the valley. They said that since they don't enjoy the mandate of Government of India they are in no position to initiate dialogue process with the separatist leaders in Kashmir. They wished that hostilities come to end in Kashmir and there is peace in the valley.
Both Sinha and Habibullah said that the meeting with both Geelani and Mirwaiz was carried out in a cordial manner with both the sides discussing the prevailing situation of Kashmir. They said that they did not offer anything to the separatists as for that it is necessary to get green signal from the Government of India. They expressed confidence that the situation would be normal in Kashmir soon with people carrying out daily chores of life.
The non-official delegation is expected to meet Jammu & Kashmir chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti and some members of her cabinet on Wednesday. It is also likely to meet mainstream politicians belonging to various political parties. The team would prepare an assessment report of the ground situation in Kashmir and same may be submitted to Government of India.
Meeting of Geelani with the delegation members has ruffled many feathers in the valley since he did not meet parliamentarians like Sitaram Yehcury, D Raja and Sharad Yadav who knocked at his door in the first week of September. The official delegation was led by Home Minister, Rajnath Singh and it comprised of many parliament members.
