HC notice to BCCI on petition to make JKCA functional, implement Lodha panel guidelines

Early Times Report

srinagar, Apr 20: The state High Court today has issued a notice, asking Board of Control for Cricket in India (BBCI) to file reply to a petition seeking its directions to make Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association functional. Hearing a petition filed by two cricketers, a single bench of the court comprising Justice D S Thakur directed the chairman BCCI as well as president JKCA to file the reply by or before May 17, the next date of hearing in the plea. The petitioners also seek direction to the chairman BCCI to implement the orders of Supreme Court in letter and spirit. The petitioners said that the infighting between rival political groups has resulted into non-functioning of the JKCA. "The result of such rivalries has led to compromise in nurturing the vast and raw talent of the youth of the State," the petitioner said, emphasizing that the cricket being the only secular unifying religion in "our heterogeneous country" forced the apex court to constitute a committee under former Chief Justice of India RM Lodha to recommend reforms for cricket in India. The Lodha committee after a thorough study of the BCCI's and state associations functioning presented its recommendations to the apex court. The apex court later ruled in favour of the majority of the committee's recommendations and directed the BCCI and state associations to implement the recommendations. "The Supreme Court by its orders sacked the higher echelons of the JKCA, leaving JKCA in total chaos, which has made the petitioners to suffer of no fault of theirs," they said.
