Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Dec 13: With government going to make the security forces better equipped, the Jammu and Kashmir has suffered highest injuries in the country while dealing with law and order.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have to remain on tenterhooks even during the peace times due to situation in the valley.
As per the official figures, 4713 policemen were injured in 2016 in the country. Of these, 4,502 policemen were injured in J&K alone while dealing with law and order problem. This means, JK police has suffered over 90 percent injuries among all forces in the country while dealing with law and order.
Most of them got injured when Kashmir Valley witnessed six-month unrest following killing of Hizbul Mujahidin commander Burhan Wani.
Around 1,800 policemen have got killed over the years. JK Police has suffered 629 casualties, (128) in 2001, (91) 2002, and (17) in 2016. Besides, 409 SPOs were also killed in militancy related incidents over the years.
Official sources said the government was concerned that security personnel suffered casualties in the valley while fighting with the militants and against stone pelters. In view of increase in attacks, the government wants its men to be better prepared to deal with any situation without losing any lives or to get injured.
"The security forces are going to be better equipped to deal with the situation effectively," a senior security officer said.
The official said the JK Police was not "well equipped" to deal properly with law and order problem in the state. "With the implementation of the modernization programme, the police may be better equipped to deal with the protestors," he said.
The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has also criticized J&K government for providing "poor infrastructure and lack of basic facilities for the state police force that needs it the most in the country"
He said the security personnel will be provided full-body protectors, better armed to ensure their safety. "We lost so many men during last year and hundreds got injured during the unrest," he said.
