BJP speaking two languages
12/13/2017 11:29:12 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 13: The BJP is in a fix. It doesn't know how to assuage the hurt feelings of the minority Hindus and Sikhs in Jammu & Kashmir whose hope the PDP-BJP Government dashed to the ground by opposing minority rights to them in the Supreme Court on December 11. To mislead and hoodwink the outraged and angry minorities, the BJP is speaking two languages.
On the One hand, BJP, Prof Virendra Gupta, has trained guns at the PDP-BJP Government and accused it of "cheating the nation" and "looting the money" meant for Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist minorities. On the other hand, a BJP Minister is claiming that the Law Minister didn't take the BJP into confidence and took the anti-minorities' decision unilaterally.
Taking on his own government a day after the SC fixed the next date of hearing on the PIL seeking minority rights for the minority communities in February, Prof Virendra Gupta on Tuesday lambasted the state government for filing an anti-minorities affidavit in the apex court. The affidavit had overruled setting up of the Minority Commission in the State, saying the National Commission for Minorities Act of 1992 was not applicable to the state because of Article 370 under which it enjoyed a special status.
The BJP spokesperson had also asserted that the "policy followed by the State Government amounts to cheating the nation and looting the money from the Government of India exchequer meant for the religious and linguistic minorities of the state".
What Prof Virendra Gupta said was a scathing attack and the attack was directed both towards the PDP and his own party, the BJP.
The same day, a BJP Minister in the Mehbooba Mufti Government took a different line. He claimed that "it was a unilateral action by the PDP ministers, particularly Law Minister Abdul Haq Khan".
"I am shocked and surprised over this unilateral action. I have planned to take up the matter with the party high command and also question Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. This (minority rights to minorities of Jammu & Kashmir issue) was a crucial matter concerning millions of people who have suffered over the past seven decades. We will get the whole thing reviewed and not allow any party (PDP) to have its way in such sensitive matters," a minister in the Mufti Government was quoted as saying.
It is difficult to believe what the BJP minister was quoted as saying. After all, it was not a new issue. The issue was pending before the SC since 2016 and it was too well known that the state government had each time taken anti-minorities' stand.
The fact of the matter is that the BJP doesn't have the will and the capacity to assert its position and authority. If it so likes, it can get the work done in no time. It simply has to tell the PDP to behave failing which it would come out of the government.
