Karnah villages reel under darkness, snowfall adds woes to their miseries

Early Times Report

KUPWARA, Dec 14: The centrally sponsored scheme (DDUGJY) has not been implemented in letter and spirit due to which scores of rural villages in Karnah and its adjoining areas are reeling under darkness from past couple of years.
According to sources that, there are scores of villages in Karnah sector in this border district that are without electricity from past couple of years, while as locals residents have been alleging that the present government has been ignoring them at all fronts and snowfall has added to their woes during winter months.
Since October/2005 when earthquake damaged everything including the property in Keran, Karnah, Tangdhar, Teetwal and its adjacent areas, the villages like Tara, Batlan, Karhama are without electricity, sources said.
Abudl Majid of Karnah said that there are other villages in Karnah which get electricity for hardly half an hour in 24-hours, basically in 1990s the government had constructed a micro hydroelectric project of 2 MGWTs and at present it is not in a position to supply the electricity to its full capacity due to some technical snags. It generates only half Megawatt of electricity but that's not enough to cater to the needs of entire area.
Another resident of the same area said that the project is almost defunct due to which the area witnesses heavy power curtailment, where as fact is that there are old machines were installed in 1990s or so.
However sources said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise of providing round the clock electricity supply to the rural households has remained confined to papers only.
It seems that the government of Jammu and Kashmir has failed in implementation of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana scheme (DDUGJY), which was launched over two years back across the country, said sources.
Sources said that the scheme was meant for rural areas with a view to ensure round the clock electricity supply to the farmers and rural households. The scheme was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 25, 2015.
Sources alleged that the local legislators are only doing a lip service as they are themselves living a luxurious life in Jammu and have left the rural masses to fend for themselves.
