Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 12: Pitching for building Jammu and Kashmir as corridor to Central Asia, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said that Government of India must take advantage of its geographical location so the state could become a nucleus towards forging a new economic alliance.
While responding to Governor's address in the Legislative Council, CM Mehbooba said, "Government of India should take this advantage to reach Central Aisa through Jammu and Kashmir and make this state a gateway of India. Roads should be opened for the movement of the people to reach other countries through Jammu and Kashmir".
She said not only Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakote roads that have already been opened for movement of people and goods, but all the traditional road link roads should be opened for free movement of people and cross trading.
She said this could be followed by similar links between South and Central Asia across Jammu and Kashmir. "Over the long term we could revive the historical route in the region as a part of the larger paradigm of regional energy and economic cooperation. This will create favorable conditions for Jammu and Kashmir to play its natural role of connecting the emerging economic zones," CM said.
"We should target Central Asia and become part of their business as number of other countries have done in the world. On the same pattern, I think, these seven (neighbouring) countries come together to make Jammu and Kashmir a modern state where all these seven countries will establish their banks, business establishments, set up universities and others institutions," she added.
