Unhappy interlocutor Dineshwar targets media
Nationalist News Channels under threat

Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 12: The newly-appointed Representative of Government of India for J&K, Dineshwar Sharma, is reportedly unhappy with certain national news channels. He, according to reports from Delhi, has urged the Union Home Minister to arrange a meeting with representatives of certain news channels so that they were told to not hold discussions on Kashmir in a manner which could derail his peace efforts in Kashmir.
Dineshwar Sharma has reportedly told the Home Minister, Rajnath Singh that "certain news channels have been spreading 'vicious propaganda' against Kashmiris" and this has been defeating the dialogue and peace process initiated by New Delhi.
Sources have disclosed that "at least four news channels routinely airing stories exaggerating events in the Kashmir Valley" and "meeting with the channel representatives would be convened shortly".
Confirming the news that there could be a meeting with some news channel representatives, an official in the Home Ministry has said, yes, there were some channels which were making a mountain out of a molehill.
"Sometimes these channels are just making a mountain out of a molehill. Many times, the debates are vitriolic and are distant from facts on the ground. This gives fodder to secessionist forces in the Kashmir Valley to sow hatred against the government," a senior official in the Home Ministry was quoted as saying.
However, another official has said that the "centre would tread cautiously on the subject as it doesn't want to impinge on the Freedom of the press". At the same time, the said official said that "they would share Sharma's concern with the television channels, adding Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had, on several occasions, asked the Centre to address the issue of news channels going overboard when it comes to reporting events in the Valley".
The J&K Government had on earlier occasions also expressed identical views, and told the Centre that "Delhi-based news channels were portraying the state in a negative light".
The reported move of the Union Government to gag the media is fraught with dangerous consequences, Restrictions on news channels will only help secessionists one way or the other and hurt the nation.
