Agra, May 16: Hundreds of local residents blocked the arterial national highway 19 (old NH 2), connecting Delhi to West Bengal, for over six hours on Wednesday afternoon demanding compensation and land to build a statue of BSF jawan Devender Singh Baghel, who was killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops along the international border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district on Monday night.
Devender's body was brought to his native Lakhanpur village under Sikandra police jurisdiction on Wednesday morning. Soon after, his family members and other residents of the village staged a massive protest by placing his body on the highway.
Devi Lal Baghel, elder brother of Devender and a member of the Central Armed Police Forces, said, "We need a piece of land for Devender's cremation and his statue erected thereafter. We also need compensation and free education for his two kids."
Devender was posted in J&K's 173th battalion since 2015. He was on duty at a forward post in Manguchak area on Monday night when Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing. He was killed by a stray bullet in the incident.
Taking cognizance of massive road blockage, district administration officials and police teams rushed to the spot and cleared the 10 km-long traffic jam on the highway.
Satya Prakash, additional district magistrate (ADM), said, "The government always gives compensation to families of jawans who are killed in action. We are also ready to help his family. But their demands for handing over the major portion of a land belonging to the Agra development authority (ADA) would be difficult. Several commuters were stuck in the snarl for hours. We finally managed to calm the agitators."
