4th International Yoga Day, A Tool for Uniting World
6/19/2018 11:03:54 PM
Ravinder Jalali

This year i.e. 2018, we
will be celebrating the 4th Yoga Day on 21st June as World Yoga Day and our Prime Minister has appealed all and every one to do Yoga. Since our Prime minister himself is an ardent practiser of Yoga and naturally urges everyone to go for Yoga whole heartedly with an intention of creating a healthier society. Yoga is not a mere physical exercise but it is an all round development of body, mind and soul. Every Indian must be proud of our Yoga which has been accepted world wide now, thanks to our Yogi Prime Minister who got it declared it as an International Yoga day on 21st June every year. On this day, the world will come together to mark the Yoga Day. Yoga is uniting the world. He appealed the society to become a 'yogi' and create a better country as the world observes 4th International Yoga Day on June 21.
On this 4th international Yoga Day ,after being challenged by Sports and Youth Affairs and part-time cricketer and full-time model Virat Kohli to reveal his "fitness" secrets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a video of yogic exercise performed by himself which serves as a source of great inspiration for the Indians. In that video PM Modi shares some of his yogic exercises with the people of India to enable them to follow him and keep fit. The moments from his morning exercises, apart from Yoga include walk on a track inspired by the Panchtatvas or 5 elements of nature - Prithvi, Jal, Agni, Vayu, Aakash. Rajyavardhan Rathore, in his capacity as the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs posted a video on twitter of himself casually doing push-ups in his office. The idea was to challenge everyone to post their own fitness routines as well, with the idea that it might become a trend. Some people were quick to rise to the challenge. This is extremely refreshing and rejuvenating and also practice breathing exercises. Yoga is for harmony and peace and has become a household name through out the world cutting across all the regional and religion barriers. This is a remarkable phenomenon in the long history of Yoga. Only a few years ago, it used to have a very limited appeal, although it is an ancient system of keeping our body, mind and soul together. In the past many people, gurus and masters who were regularly teaching the yoga to the people but the revolution, which was brought it in when Prime Minister Narinder Modi addressed the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 and got resolution passed with 177 countries supporting it and declared "21st JUNE" every year as an "International Day". It was really a great achievement for India and the entire nation celebrated it as a great moment. The entire Country felt proud of getting 21st JUNE to be declared as an International Yoga Day , thereby giving due recognition to our ancient wisdom which had been prevalent in our country since thousands of years ago. Incidentally, the majority of Muslim countries supported India - 46 members of the Organisation of Islamic countries, including Iran, and Gulf countries like Qatar and the United Arab emirates. It was a great moment and feeling for every Indian. The popularity of Yoga has not been hindered by the diversity of religious beliefs, languages or geographic conditions.
The interest for yoga is growing day by day because the life style of people has undergone a tremendous change and the stress is taking a heavy toll on the humanity. They have been left with no or little time for the welfare of themselves. Though modern gyms and health clubs have come up but has little scope in the rejuvenating the lives which has become dull and monotonous because of the absence of wholesome development of human lives The suicide cases by leading so called successful professionals is a clear indication that to live a healthy life, the development of the body is not the only requirement but there are other aspects of life like mind and soul which is to be taken care of. These celebrities who have everything in the form of materialistic things still complain of something missing in their lives. The something missing in their lives is to be first identified and replenished and the yoga is the only alternative which can ensure all round development of body, mind and soul. These aspects of life, if taken care off, will usher a new lease of life and will enable the human beings to live to their fullest potential.
We have to take religion and politics out of yoga. Treat yoga as sport, a recreational activity that adds value to life, strength to muscles and stamina to lungs. Yoga in schools is a great, though not novel, idea. It is a healthy prescription for children used to sedentary lives, stress of competition and pollution in the environment. Just as students are expected to study pre-decided subjects, at pre-decided hours, there is no harm in making yogic postures and breathing exercises part of the curriculum, at least for those who are medically fit for them.
Yoga is a philosophy, a spiritual path and an ancient world-view. Yoga is a tradition with thousands of years of history, a vast canon of sacred literature, and a lineage of teachers who have guided its development and preserved its teachings for the benefit of modern humanity. Yoga has evolved over the years to become a secular practice, with disciples in several countries. Followers of other faiths have stripped yoga of its religious meaning by practicing just it exercises, renaming them and omitting the chants that link it to Hindu scriptures. The theory of relativity was given by Albert Einstein who was a Jew but does it mean that it belongs to Jews. No, every body is using it. The TV, Computer, Mobile, etc and almost all modern gadgets have been invented by Christians or belonging to one religion or the other but every body is making use of it. We don't say that these belong to their religions and we don't use. Rather we must acknowledge and feel great about the people, their country and their faith for their contribution to human mankind. They don't patent it and restrict others from using it or ask the user to subscribe to their faith before using it. Yoga is a spiritual discipline, much like prayer, fasting and meditation. Yoga has the capacity to enhance our personal beliefs and faith.
Let us ensure that the benefits of the Yoga reach to the mankind irrespective of their faith and derive maximum benefits, which eventually will translate in holistic development of body, mind and soul and make them a good human being and a healthy Nation. It has also provided job opportunities to youth who have accepted it as a profession and are teaching Yoga through out India and abroad.
